ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team hosted the No. 24 ranked Cortland Red Dragons at Carp Wood Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Bombers controlled most of the possession and outshot Cortland, with Sarah Sinnott netting her first collegiate brace to power Ithaca to a 2-0 victory.
The Bombers got off to a fast start, displaying slick passing from the opening touch. In the 3rd minute, Ally Stanton ripped a shot from the top of the box, leading to the game's first corner kick. IC continued to pressure the Red Dragons in the final third and were rewarded with another corner kick at the 6:25 mark.
Ava Detorie's initial corner was blocked and sent back to her, but she whipped in another cross that found the head of Sarah Sinnott, who sent it into the back of the net to put Ithaca up 1-0. Just over a minute later, Grace Hickey recorded her first save of the match, denying Tyla Vuotto.
Ithaca generated back-to-back shots on frame, forcing Kristen Spendal into saves on attempts from both Rosie Bostian and Ava Detorie. Cortland's most dangerous scoring chance came in the 37th minute when Katie Diem attempted a free kick from 35 yards out, but the shot dipped into the arms of Grace Hickey. The Bombers outclassed Cortland in the first 45 minutes, holding a 12-3 advantage in shot attempts, including seven shots on goal, and went into the halftime break leading 1-0.
The Bombers added an insurance goal just minutes into the second half, with Sarah Sinnott once again finding the back of the net. Off another corner kick, Allie McCabe settled the ball, which found the right foot of Sinnott, who smashed it into the upper center of the net, leaving no chance for a save.
Rosie Bostian nearly added another insurance goal with a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was bending into the bottom right corner but was saved by Spendal in the 63rd minute. Momentum swung a bit in favor of Cortland at the 79:29 mark when Julia Cascone was shown her second yellow card. The Red Dragons generated more shot attempts afterward, but none threatened Grace Hickey. The senior goalkeeper tallied the final save of the match in the 87th minute, recording her third shutout of the season and the 15th of her career.
The Bombers outshot Cortland 16-13, placing nine shots on target. With the win, IC improves to 3-0-1 on the season and will return to action in another non-conference matchup on Saturday. Ithaca will travel to Rochester, N.Y., to square off with Nazareth University, with the first kick slated for 4 p.m.
