ITHACA, N.Y. – In its final non-conference matchup of the season, the Ithaca College women's soccer team hosted the No. 16 ranked University of Rochester on Friday afternoon. Both teams scored a second-half goal, with Kaelyn Fernandez netting the goal for Ithaca, resulting in a 1-1 tie. The Bombers remain unbeaten with a record of 5-0-3 as they enter Liberty League play, while Rochester improved to 6-1-2.
Both teams had early chances. Ally Stanton attempted a shot from within the 18-yard box in the 7th minute, but it sailed wide. The Bombers made a solid defensive stop when Allison Heft halted a Rochester attack by shepherding the ball out of play for an IC goal kick.
Ithaca continued to dominate possession in Rochester's attacking third and nearly scored in the 26th minute. Ally Stanton found space at the top of the box and ripped a shot that was blocked by a YellowJacket defender.
Rochester had a free kick in the 34th minute, leading to a corner kick opportunity. Claire Baim's attempt was denied by Grace Hickey, and the YellowJackets were ruled offside on the rebound. Ithaca applied defensive pressure, and in transition, Sarah Sinnott's shot was denied by Rochester's goalkeeper Grace Kuropatkin at the 41:52 mark. The teams went into halftime tied 0-0, with Ithaca outshooting Rochester 6-3.
Grace Hickey made a crucial save in the 53rd minute, stopping an Alyssa Doody shot. Shortly after, Ithaca found the back of the net at the 57:00 mark. IC earned a corner kick, and Ava Detorie's cross found Rosie Bostian, who settled it to Kaelyn Fernandez. Fernandez fired it into the bottom corner, giving Ithaca a 1-0 lead. The Bombers nearly added an insurance goal on a breakaway by Zara Nourie, but her shot was saved by Kuropatkin in the 63rd minute.
Kuropatkin made another key stop in the 72nd minute, saving a shot from Rosie Bostian at the top of the 18-yard box.
Rochester began to control possession in its attacking third, and Alyssa Doody's cross found Claire Grover, who one-touched her shot into the bottom corner past Grace Hickey. The tying goal was scored in the 87th minute, and neither team managed another shot.
Hickey finished the match with a season-high six saves. Ithaca outshot Rochester 13-12, but the YellowJackets had more shots on target. Ally Stanton, Sarah Sinnott, and Kaelyn Fernandez each had three shots.
The Bombers will open Liberty League play on Saturday when they host Bard College for Senior Day. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
