ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's soccer team played to a scoreless tie against York College of Pennsylvania in a defensive clinic for both teams on Sunday afternoon as the team hosted the Spartans at Carp Wood Field. With the result, the Bombers now have a record of 1-0-1.
Both teams kept up the defensive pressure and limited the space when either team had the ball, keeping the scoring chances limited. Ithaca had 17 shot attempts and York College had 11. However, both teams only had 3 shots on goal and on target, each of which resulted in a save.
The first half of the game was a strong defensive effort from both teams. The Bombers were limited to one shot on goal in the half which came in the 42
nd minute when
Jayne Bogle ripped an attempt that forced Joss Metz save. However, York College did not fare much better as they only managed two shots on goal in the first half, both of which occurred in the opening few minutes of the match.
York College just missed the first goal of the game as the shot attempt sailed went just over the crossbar in the 16
th minute. That chance was followed up by a couple other chances including a one-timer that was denied by
Grace Hickey.
In the 53
rd munute, Ithaca defended a corner kick chance well getting two blocks within the 18-yard box to keep the game scoreless. Shortly after,
Grace Hickey made a huge save to keep the game scoreless at the 59:41 mark
Arguably the Bombers most dangerous opportunity occurred in the 66
th minute when a
Devin Sylvia shot was blocked by a Spartan defender and trickled just wide. The ensuing corner kick was hit with a header by
Zara Nourie and went high and over the net.
Allison Heft made a huge block right in front of the goal on a hard shot by Meg Kalthof that preserved the shutout in the 76th minute.
The Bombers caught fire late, but none of their shot attempts were able to hit the back of the net and break the scoreless tie. Ithaca then had a narrow miss from
Lily Fusco as the shot went inches high over the crossbar from an attempt from distance.
Ithaca will head on the road for the first time this season when they take on Mount Saint Mary College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 7. The Bombers are 2-0 against the Knights and scored a dominant 5-0 victory over them last season.
