ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College men's lacrosse took on the No. 3 nationally ranked RIT Tigers in a Liberty League matchup on Wednesday evening under the lights. The Bombers fell to the Tigers 16-10 in a hard-fought game that saw IC close it out well scoring seven goals within the fourth quarter. With the loss, Ithaca falls to 6-6 on the season and 0-4 in Liberty League play.
The first period started off with an RIT goal from Michael Finneran within the first few minutes of play. Ithaca's
Charlie Niebuhr responded with a goal two minutes later, netting his 22
nd of the season. RIT would go on to score two more goals before Ithaca responded again. With eight minutes to play a successful clear attempt by Ithaca led to a
Graham Brady goal making the score 3-2. A faceoff won by Ithaca then led to another goal by
Charlie Niebuhr tying it up at three goals apiece. RIT would then go on to score the next three goals of the period making the score 6-3, with Ithaca trailing going into the second quarter.
The second period was a slow one for the Bombers, with no goals. RIT went on to score six more goals, putting the score at 12-3. Ithaca attempted 10 shots, won three faceoffs and collected six ground balls, but RIT's quick paced transition offense stung the Bombers.
Coming out of the halftime break, the third was a similar start as the second. RIT came out hot again, scoring within the first 5 minutes of play with a Luke Pilcher effort that was assisted by
Jake Erickson. The Tigers scored again within the next minute, making the score 14-3. RIT scored one more goal in the period, making the score 15-3 going into the last period of play.
During the final 15 minutes of play, the Bombers came out strong with
Graham Brady and
Peter Nowlan scoring two goals within the first three minutes of play (15-5). With 10 minutes to play, a clear attempt by Ithaca was good which led to a
John Sramac goal. The Bombers would go on to score three more goals within the next three minutes, making the score 15-9. Despite the Bombers late surge, it wasn't quite enough to make a comeback. The final score was 16-10, in favor of RIT.
Niebuhr was the leading scorer for Ithaca netting a hat trick, as
Graham Brady,
John Sramac and
Sam Baker each scored two goals apiece. The Tigers were led by Clifford Gaston who scored four goals on nine shots.
Ithaca College will host No. 4 ranked St. Lawrence University on Saturday, April 13 at Higgins Stadium for a 4 p.m. start.
