GENESEO, N.Y. — The Ithaca College men's lacrosse team dropped a close contest to SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon, falling 11-10 on the road in non-conference action. The loss was the first of the season for the Bombers who fall to 2-1 on the early portion of their 2024 schedule.
The Ithaca offense was led by a trifecta of Bombers, recording a hat trick from attackman
Graham Brady, followed by two goals apiece by
Sekou Ibrahima,
Jack Pastore, and
Charlie Niebuhr.
John Sramac recorded two assists on the day, while
Kyle Proctor and
Hunter Wallace recorded one each as well. Goalkeeper
Cole Corrigan was in net for the Bombers and made 14 saves on 25 shots on goal.
Both team's offenses were off for the races, the Bombers were able to strike first when attackman
Graham Brady put one away early-on in the first minute of play. The Knights were able to quickly respond with a Brady Sullivan goal at the 13-minute mark. Ithaca was dominating the field, with three shots on net in a row, when
Charlie Niebuhr was able to finally put it away making it a 2-1 game with 12 minutes to go in the period.
Brady Sullivan from the Knights was able to tie the game up with a goal assisted by Jimmy Atkinson making it 2-2. After a failed clear attempt by Ithaca, followed by a turnover, Geneseo's Jimmy Atkinson was able to put one in the back of the net making it a 3-2 game with three minutes to go in the opening quarter.
Jack Pastore was able to tie the game up, thanks to a
Kyle Proctor assist with two minutes to go.
Cole Corrigan racked in a big save to end the first quarter in a 3-3 stalemate.
Geneseo came out hot in the second quarter with a trio of goals, two of which were from Robert Boneillo, and one from Riley Henselder, the Knights had the Bombers beat 6-3. Ithaca's offense was held to zero goals in the second period.
The second half started with a faceoff win from
Chris Sohl which propelled
John Sramac to score which was assisted by
Hunter Wallace. After another possession grab from Ithaca,
Sekou Ibrahima was able to add in another one for the Bombers making it a 5-6 game with 14 minutes left in the quarter. Geneseo answered quickly to halt the mini-Bombers run with William McCumiskey tallying one in making it 7-5 in favor of the Knights.
The second half overall started with both teams causing turnovers and trading chances, but Sramac would not be stopped with 11 minutes left, getting an assist from Erickson. The Bombers kept up the pressure, with Erickson scoring three minutes later off an assist from Pastore. A pair of Knights goals brought their deficit back to two, followed by Turner and Sullivan trading goals to make the score 10–8. After a penalty on Riley Henselder, Ithaca had an extra man opportunity, where
Charlie Niebuhr was able to put one back cutting the lead to only one goal for Geneseo.
Graham Brady came up big with his second goal of the day tying the game up. Ithaca's spurt of offense came out big as
Sekou Ibrahima followed with another goal making the game 8-7 in favor of the Bombers. After a faceoff won by Geneseo, Riley Henselder was able to put back his second goal of the day, tying the game up at eight with nine minutes to go in the quarter. After a Geneseo turnover,
Graham Brady was able to complete his hat trick of the day with a goal, forcing Geneseo to call a timeout with eight minutes to go in the quarter. Brady Sullivan tallied in his third goal on the day, on a fast break finish where he tied the game up at nine goals apiece heading into the final 15 minutes of the game.
After a quiet start to the fourth quarter,
Jack Pastore from the Bombers put another one back after an assist by
John Sramac making it 10-9 with ten minutes left in the game. Geneseo's William McCumisky responded with a goal for the Knights tying it up at 10 with seven minutes to go. After a tough finish offensively by Brady Sullivan, he put away another goal making it 11-10 in favor of the Knights. This forced an Ithaca timeout with five minutes to go in the game. Ithaca was unable to convert for a last-minute goal to tie the game, making it a 11-10 game in favor of the Knights as the Bombers had a chance with under 30 seconds, but
Sekou Ibrahima saw his shot sail wide of the target.
Ithaca had 42 shots, with the Knights putting 51. Turnovers were 21–13 in the Knights favor, faceoffs were about even, and ground balls were dominated 40-26 in favor of SUNY Geneseo.
Ithaca looks to bounce back on Wednesday against Nazareth at Higgins Stadium, the game is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
