Men’s Soccer Into the Liberty League Championship Tournament with 1-1 tie at RPI

TROY, N.Y.– On a brisk Saturday morning on the home field of the Engineers, RPI and Ithaca men's soccer came to a stalemate with the score finishing at 1-1. RPI's record goes to 3-11-3 while Ithaca moves to 7-7-3 as today marked the final day of the 2024 regular season.

The chilly weather set the scene for a perfect fall rivalry game between two competitive teams. RPI has struggled this season but against an arch-rival like Ithaca, they came ready to play. The Bombers made the first offensive push as Jared Krasnove made the first two shots of the game but couldn't find the net with them. Despite some flurries of offensive attacks from the Bombers, it was the home Engineers who found twine first as Landon Bradley scored a goal assisted by Benjamin Dionisio to make it 1-0 RPI. The rest of the first half played out with nothing major out on the field up until the final minutes. In the 44th minute, Ithaca gave themselves a chance for a late goal with a corner kick. Jack Carney had a shot that went off the left post and then Liam Breslin was unmarked off a rebound and sailed the attempt above the crossbar. Soccer is a game of inches and the Bombers came up a couple of inches unlucky with two shots that could have given them the lead.

The second half saw most of both starting lineups return for both teams, but you could tell Ithaca had a jump in them after coming so close to scoring at the end of the first half. They were finally able to convert on an offensive chance when Jack Longo tucked one in the bottom right corner with the assists coming from Jack Carney and Emmett Enriquez. The goal came off of a throw that was headed down by Carney and Enriquez sent a one-touch pass in front to Longo who converted on the oppurtunity. The rest of the second half was a chippy and intense brand of Liberty League soccer, with neither defensive front willing to give an edge. The game ended 1-1 and neither team could truly celebrate.

Andrew Kusek and Jared Krasnove led the way with two shots on goal for Ithaca, while Brayden Milbrandt made three net saves for the Bombers.

With the tie and Clarkson's loss to Union this afternoon, Ithaca clinched the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Championship Tournament. The Bombers will take on the No. 3 seeded Skidmore College who finished 6-3-6 overall and 5-2-2 within the conference. The Bombers hosted Skidmore on October 19 and suffered a 2-0 defeat but outshot the Thoroughbreds 20-11.
