POUGHKEEPSIE, NY– The No. 8 ranked Ithaca College women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking defeat to the Vassar College Brewers on Saturday with a final score of 2-1 with all three goals coming within minutes of the opening kickoff. The loss drops the Bombers overall record to 10-2-3 making both of their losses from Liberty League play. It was a massive win for the Brewers as they improved to 9-2-4 overall with a 4-1-2 record in conference play.
If you're a soccer fan who enjoys action right from the first whistle, then this was the game for you. Fireworks exploded early from two usually defensively stout squads as the offensive chances were off the charts. The contest's first goal belonged to the Bombers amidst the chaos as
Sarah Sinnott continued her impressive campaign by finding the twine with the assist coming from
Kaelyn Fernandez, another crucial part of this Bombers team.
The Bomber's lead lasted for exactly 32 seconds as the Brewers scored essentially off of the ensuing kickoff. Madison Bouggess finished off the offensive opportunity for Vassar and completely seized the early momentum from Ithaca with a roaring crowd now on their side. That wasn't all though, because exactly 55 seconds later, more madness on offense for the Brewers as Madison Bouggess scored again giving Vassar the lead. One of the craziest starts to a match you will see and the same player scoring both Vassar goals added to the dramatics. The dust settled after the fiery start however, and the score remained the same heading into halftime with the Brewers leading the Bombers 2-1.
It was clear that neither team was pleased with a chaotic start to a hugely important game, so the focus was directed toward the defensive side of the ball, especially on Vassar's side as they looked to protect their lead.
Kaelyn Fernandez had a couple of shooting opportunities that just missing the net. Despite some late pushes, Ithaca couldn't quite breach Vassar's reinforced defensive front, and the Brewers walked away victorious.
Fernandez and
Zara Nourie each had five shot attempts for the Bombers while Alice Crowley had three for Vassar.
Ithaca's next game will be the fifth and final of their road trip against another Liberty League foe in the RIT Tigers on Tuesday, October 29 at 5 p.m. in Rochester.
