SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The No. 9 ranked Ithaca College women's soccer team returned to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, defeating the No. 18 ranked Skidmore Thoroughbreds 2-1 in a crucial Liberty League matchup. Ally Stanton's second-half game-winning goal propelled the Bombers to victory.
The Bombers ended Skidmore's season-opening unbeaten streak, dropping the Thoroughbreds to 8-1-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the Liberty League. Ithaca remains atop the conference with a 10-1-3 overall record and a 5-1 mark in league play.
Ithaca's defense was solid from the start, limiting Skidmore's possession. The Bombers fired four shots on goal, with Ally Stanton and Sarah Sinnott forcing saves from Skidmore's goalkeeper, Avery Rogers. Skidmore broke the deadlock at the 20:39 mark with a goal from Ashley Downes, assisted by Ellianna Caporusso.
The Bombers quickly equalized less than two minutes later when Ava Detorie scored her first goal of the season, converting a one-on-one opportunity against Rogers. The teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
Ithaca came out strong in the second half, taking five shots in the first 13 minutes. Their pressure paid off when Ally Stanton scored in the 59th minute, marking her sixth goal of the season and fifth game-winner. Ithaca's defense held firm against late Skidmore pressure.
The Bombers outshot Skidmore 16-11, with six shots on target. Grace Hickey made four saves to secure the win.
The nationally ranked Bombers continue their road trip with a Liberty League contest at Vassar College on Saturday, October 26 at 2 p.m.
