ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's basketball team started out the New Year with a bang as the Bombers came away with a convincing 70-43 win against Union College utilizing the depth of their roster. With Friday evenings win in at Ben Light Gymnasium, Ithaca improves their record to 8-2 overall, while the Garnet Chargers dropped to 3-8 overall.
The Bombers came out the gates to a bit of a slow start only scoring four points in the first four minutes of the game, but they also limited Union's chances with tough defense.
Camryn Coffey gave Ithaca a surge of energy with a back-to-back three pointer followed by a driving layup.
Annabella Yorio was a force on the glass, clocking in a total of eight rebounds on the night. A trey from
June Dickson and a jumper from
Hannah Polce gave the Bombers a comfortable lead closing out the first quarter with a 16-9.
Tori Drevna drew a foul in the paint and was able to put back two free throws propelling the lead 18-9 in favor of the Bombers.
Ithaca came out strong in the second quarter recording a pair of layups from Coffey and Yorio, and a three-pointer from Polce assisted by Dickson. The 7-2 run forced Union to call a fast timeout in hopes to slow the momentum that the Bombers had gained.
Elizabeth Majka added six points in the quarter to help the Bombers feel confident at half with the score being 39-16.
The third quarter was a complete Bombers takeover with a fast three pointer from
Camryn Coffey followed by a fast break jumper by
Annabella Yorio.
Hannah Polce hit a jumper assisted by
June Dickson which propelled the lead to 46-18. The Bombers were shooting 75% from beyond the arc in the third heading into the fourth quarter increasing the IC lead to 64-30.
Union came out in the fourth early outscoring Ithaca 11-2 in the first five minutes. It was a defensive battle for the remainder of the game, with the Bombers coming out on top 70-43.
Every active member of the team saw minutes on the floor for the Bombers as
Camryn Coffey led the scoring with 12 points.
Hannah Polce chipped in 11 points overall, and
Annabella Yorio and
June Dickson added in 10 apiece. The bench added in 24 points total to this win, as they outscored the Garnet Chargers. Ithaca shot 42.9% from the field and held Union under 30% for shooting from the field.
Ithaca College will host William Smith in Ben Light Gymnasium for another conference matchup. The Bombers will face the Herons at 2 p.m. on Saturday January 6.
