ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College men's soccer team defeated Alfred State College 2-1 at Carp Wood Field on Wednesday. This was the second consecutive win for goalkeeper
Johannes Berghahn, as the Bombers defense kept Alfred State in check, outshooting the Pioneers 16-3.
Â
The game started slow for both sides, with both sides combining for five total shots in the first half, with the Bombers out-shooting the Pioneers three shots to two. Both defenses played aggressive in the first half, with 13 combined fouls and two yellow cards against the Pioneers.Â
Â
Seven minutes into the second half the Pioneers broke the scoreless tie with a goal off of a corner kick that snuck into the bottom right-hand corner of the net, marking the first time all season that an opponent scored against the Bombers defense.Â
Â
IC upped the pressure against the Pioneers defense 10 minutes into the half, as
Conor Baird placed two shots on goal within 30 seconds of each other but was denied each time by Alfred State's goalkeeper to keep the Bombers off the scoreboard. He curled an attempt from just inside the 18-yard box but it was headed away by a Pioneer defender at the goal line.
Â
Ithaca attacked the net 16 minutes into the half, as a free kick by Baird was blocked in front of the net by the Pioneers defense and Alfred State was able to clear the ball out, preventing any damage.Â
Â
The Bombers evened the score with 14:19 left in the contest, as a shot by
Gustav Bauerle was tipped by Connor Baird and found the bottom right-hand corner of the net, knotting the game at 1-1. Ithaca scored the winning goal thanks to a
Reefe Harrison shot that gave the Bombers a 2-1 lead with eight minutes remaining in the game. It was an absolute banger from the top of the box as he ripped it through the traffic in front of net.
Â
Ithaca's defense held off the Pioneers for the final eight minutes, as the Bombers closed out the win to earn their second consecutive win this season.
Â
The Bombers defense allowed just one shot by the Pioneers in the second half while putting up 13 in the 45 minutes of action. The 16 total shots by Ithaca tied the season-high set in the previous game against Wilkes on September 4th.Â
Â
Ithaca College (2-0-1) will travel to Brockport, N.Y. on Saturday, September 16Â to face SUNY Brockport in a non-conference matchup.Â
