Women’s Soccer Open Season with Dominant Display against Elmira

ITHACA, N.Y. – It took just over two minutes for the Ithaca College women's soccer team to find the back of the net on Friday as they led from start to finish in a dominant 10-1 win over Elmira College. The Bombers netted five first half goals as each were scored by a different student-athlete and they tallied five more during the final 45 minutes of action.

Senior forward Rosie Bostian opened the scoring for the 2023 season just 2:20 into it as she received a cross from the left side of the goal mouth and was finished off one-time into the back of the net. The Bombers would double their lead just minutes later when Julia Cascone scored a solo goal as she sliced the ball into the bottom righthand corner.

The Bombers continued to pressure Elmira in its defensive third for the next 20 minutes and were rewarded in the 24th minute when Kaelyn Fernandez used her pace to get past a defender earning a one-on-one with the keeper. Fernandez showed composure and slotted the ball into the left corner giving IC the 3-0 lead.

Fellow sophomore Ali Amari got the home crowd to roar again just four minutes later as with her back to the goal, she turned and ripped the ball into the upper right hand corner, which gave the Elmira keeper no shot at saving it. The final goal of the first half was finished off by Ally Stanton who was assisted by Fernandez.

It was more of the same for Ithaca in the second half, Carrie Davis saw a wide-open net and cashed in after Rachel Hersch pulled back a ball, beautifully to the right foot of Davis. Ava Detorie made it 7-0 when she dribbled past two Elmira defenders and with her right foot she slotted it past Miranda Waterman. The lone goal from the Soaring Eagles came on an IC miscue that left Piper Andrews with a breakaway effort on net as she bested Grace Hickey.

IC scored three more unanswered goals in the final 35 minutes of action. Goals were scored by Devin Sylvia, Sarah Sinnott and Angela Cioffi.

With the win, Ithaca improves to 1-0 on the season and will return to action on Sunday, September 3 for their first road contest of the season against York College (Pa.). Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
