ITHACA, N.Y. - For the sixth consecutive year, Ithaca College has finished within the top 20 of the final LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings, as Ithaca placed 12th overall among 450 NCAA Division III schools (323 schools earned points) at the conclusion of the 2022-23 academic season with 783 points. Directors' Cup points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports in NCAA postseason competition, measured by nine women's sports and nine men's sports. It is also the 21st time since the inception of the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup that Ithaca has finished within the top 20.
"I could not be prouder of what our coaches and student-athletes accomplished this year," said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Susan Bassett '79. "Our teams were consistent throughout all three seasons with 14 teams earning points for NCAA postseason competition. That's a testament to everyone involved in our department. Thank you to our coaches, student-athletes and support staff for all your hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence."
IC remains at the top of Division III competition as just one of five schools to finish within the top 30 every year since the Directors' Cup started in 1995-96. The other institutions are Amherst College (27th), Emory University (5th), Middlebury College (8th) and Williams College (3rd). Calvin University, which had been on the short list of top 30 finishers every year, placed 47th in 2022-23.
Ithaca was the top school in New York once again, beating out SUNY Geneseo in 22nd by nearly 150 points, and led at Liberty League schools by a significant margin (RPI – 48th, 381.5 points, Hobart and William Smith – 61st, 309 points and RIT – 70th, 248 points).
During the spring, IC earned 254.25 points from four teams. Women's crew contributed 73 points with a fifth place finish at nationals, while baseball earned 64 in a tie for ninth. Women's outdoor track & field picked up 63.75 points with an 11th place performance and men's outdoor track & field received 53.5 points for 20th place.
Ithaca was 18th at the conclusion of the fall season after earning 202.5 points from women's cross country, football, women's soccer and volleyball. Football paced Ithaca with 70 points with a tie for fifth place after reaching the national quarterfinals, while women's soccer and volleyball each received 50 points for their trips to the second round. Women's cross country earned 32.5 point after their performance at the NCAA Niagara Regional.
In the winter, IC received NCAA postseason points from six programs for 326.25 points and moved up to eighth in the standings. Women's indoor track & field earned the highest total of 70.5 points for their eighth place finish at NCAAs, while women's swimming & diving received 61.5 for a 14th place result. Men's indoor track & field contributed 59.3 points, wrestling earned 52 points, women's basketball was awarded 50 points and men's swimming & diving scored 33 points towards the school total.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Complete standings and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA's website at
