ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team closed out its regular season with an 8-5 win over Brockport at Freeman Field on Tuesday afternoon and will head into the Liberty League Crossover Series with a 23-13 record. The Bombers will travel to RPI for a best-of-three series beginning on May 6 at 12 p.m. for a doubleheader.
After a quick two-and-a-half innings, the Bombers scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the third as
Ethan Rothstein ripped a double to dead centerfield and
Riley Brawdy scored all the way from first base. Brawdy led off the inning with a bloop single to right field.
Brockport tied the game at 1-1 in the of the fourth inning with a two-out single down the left field line. The Golden Eagles then threatened to take the lead in the fifth as a stolen base and error allowed the runner to move to third, but
Garrett Callaghan kept the game tied with a diving stop on a grounder at first base to retire the side.
Ithaca took the lead in the fifth, 2-1, as
Colin Shashaty reached on a walk and then moved all the way to third on a throwing error. Shashaty then scored on a passed ball.
Brockport jumped back ahead in the top of the seventh with three runs to take a 4-2 lead. The first run scored on a base hit to right field and then a two-run home run to right-center extended the lead.
The Bombers tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh, 4-4, as an infield error allowed
Matt Curtis to score from second base and then Rothstein drove home
Matt Fabian with a double down the line. On the play,
Gil Merod was thrown out at the plate for the potential go-ahead run to end the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Ithaca broke the 4-4 deadlock with a bases loaded two-run single up the middle by Shashaty that brought in
Collin Feeney and Callaghan. The Bombers continued to apply pressure by loading the bases again and
Josh Kaplan came through with a two-run double down the left field line to bring in
Colin Dunn and Shashaty to extend Ithaca's lead to 8-4.
Brockport added a run in the ninth to account for the 8-5 final score.
Jack Colyer started the game for IC on the mound and struck out five batters over 5.0 innings pitched in a no decision.
John Griffin entered in relief and allowed three runs in 1.2 innings before
Colin Leyner entered in the seventh and picked up the win.
Kyle Lambert tossed the ninth inning.
The winner of the crossover series will solidify its place in the Liberty League Tournament on May 11-13.
