Ithaca Softball Fall Short in Liberty League Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game One, University of Rochester 3, Ithaca College 2 (F-8)

TROY, N.Y. - The University of Rochester took game one of the Liberty League Championship with a 3–2 win in extra innings. The Bombers came storming back from a two-run deficit in the sixth to tie the game, but clutch hitting by the YellowJackets in the top of the eighth inning handed the Bombers its first loss of the tournament to force a winner-takes-all game.

Riley Piromalli had a strong first two innings in the circle, tossing three-up, and three-down innings. The Bombers' offense put runners on first in each of the first two innings but stranded a runner at first and hit into a double play to end the innings.

The YellowJackets broke through in the top of the third inning, taking a 2–0 lead. Ally Kim hit a two-out double to score a runner on first to put Rochester on the scoreboard. In the next at-bat, Bailey Nicholoff singled to bring home Kim for the score.

The Bombers again got an early runner on base in the third with a leadoff single by Madison Casale. The YellowJackets earned two quick outs before Alison Dell'Orto singled, but the right fielder made a great throw to beat the baserunner to third base.

Piromalli continued to pitch well, retiring the next nine batters as the Bombers continued to leave runners on base. The breakthrough came in the bottom of the sixth, with the Bombers loading the bases with no outs. Sela Scheinman drew a leadoff walk and Dell'Orto and Hudson Hassler each hit infield singles. Haley Petrucci drove in the first run with a good piece of hitting, grounding out to the shortstop to allow Scheinman to come home. Tava Kasper tied the game with a base hit through to left field for a 2–2 score. Maddie White came in to pitch for Rochester coming in relief, earning a strikeout and a pop-out to get out of a first and third jam.

Piromalli again took down the YellowJackets in order in the seventh with three easy fly balls for the Bombers defense. White continued to pitch well too, striking out two batters in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

The University of Rochester scored a run in the top of the eighth to reclaim its lead with a two-out RBI single by Nicholoff. Petrucci picked up a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth, but two pop-outs ended the inning to force a second game.

Game Two, University of Rochester 4, Ithaca 3 (F-10)

The Bombers came out swinging in the top of the first with three-straight singles. Sela Scheinman led it off with a bunt single that was followed by a single from Hudson Hassler and Allison Dell'Orto slashed an RBI single to give IC the lead. Emily Sharlach stranded runners on first and second to get out of the early jam for Rochester.

Anna Cornell got the start in the circle and worked her way back from a Bomber fielding error that left Brooke Nicholoff stranded as well as Cornell got a big pop fly to end the inning with runners on second and third.

Ithaca would add it its lead in the top of the third inning forcing the YellowJackets to go to their bullpen. It was once again Scheinman that led things off with a single, and after Molly Broccolo entered, she stole second. Dell'Orto followed with another single to put runners on second and third, and Haley Petrucci made it 2-0 with a bunt single and Tava Kasper joined the RBI party with a single up the middle making it 3-0.

Rochester had an immediate response with back-to-back doubles in the bottom half of the frame that made it 3-1 and another double two-batters later cut the Bombers lead to 3-2. IC would go to their bullpen with Riley Piromalli working out of the jam as she did the same in the fifth inning.

The game would go into extra innings, just like the two teams did two days prior and in the game prior to the winner-taker all. The Bombers would push across a run in the top of the 10th inning making the most of a defensive miscue. Petrucci led it off with a single and moved over after back-to-back sacrifices. She would score on an Olivia Comolli grounder that was booted.

The YellowJackets had an immediate response, this time walking it off in the bottom half of the inning. Piromalli retired the leadoff hitter, but Hunter Gilbreath reached on a single and advanced on a throwing error. Gilbreth would score on another throwing error making it 4-4. Piromalli got the next batter to foul out, but Jenna Gorecki walked it off with her second hit of the ball game on a line drive single.

With the back-to-back wins Rochester earned the Liberty League conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, but with an impressive showing in the LL tournament, Ithaca College will now wait and see if they did enough to earn an at-large bid. The NCAA Division III Softball Selection Show airs on Monday, May 15 at 1 p.m.
