Ithaca Softball Takes Down No. 17 Rochester in Extra Innings

TROY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team earned a clutch 2–1 victory in extra innings over the second-seeded University of Rochester in the first game of the Liberty League tournament. Riley Piromalli controlled the game in the circle and the Bombers were lifted by Belle de Oliveira's two RBI, including the game-winning hit in the top of the eighth.

It was a pitcher's duel as Riley Piromalli and Molly Broccolo dominated in the circle. Broccolo tossed five and one-third innings, working out of a jam in each inning until IC broke through in the sixth. Priomalli pitched a complete game with a final line of one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts.

The Bombers threatened to score midway through the game, putting two runners on in each of the third and fourth innings. Ithaca could not advance any runner past second, stranding runners in three of the first four innings.

After allowing a runner in two of the first three innings, Piromalli tossed one-two-three innings in the fourth and fifth with two strikeouts.

The Bombers took a late 1–0 lead in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly hit by Belle de Oliveira. Hudson Hassler led off the inning with a single and Tava Kasper doubled to put runners on second and third. The Bombers only got one run, stranding a runner on third to end the inning.

The YellowJackets quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Jenna Gorecki hit a two-out single to score a runner from second, tying the game 1–1 heading into the seventh. Both teams went down in order in the seventh inning, sending the game into extra innings.

The Bombers took the lead again in the top of the eighth from another RBI by de Oliveira. Hassler reached first from an error and Kasper and Haley Petrucci each singled to load the bases with two outs. De Oliveira singled up the middle to bring Hassler home for the 2–1 lead.

Piromalli earned two quick outs in the bottom of the eighth, but the YellowJackets rallied late with back-to-back singles to put the tying run in scoring position. Piromalli forced a pop-out in foul territory for the third out to close out a big victory for the Bombers.

With the win, Ithaca improves to 26-10-1 and will play the No. 1 seed RPI tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. The Engineers defeated Union 8-0 in their opening game of the Liberty League Tournament.
