Men’s Lacrosse Falls on the Road to St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Ithaca College men's lacrosse team fell to St. John Fisher College on the road Tuesday afternoon by the score of 16–14. The Bombers now sit at 7–7 on the season.

Offensively, the Bombers were led by Charlie Niebuhr and John Sramac, who each had four goals. Jake Erickson added three as well, and Kyle Savery had two while Sekou Ibrahima found the back of the net once. Sramac, Erickson, and Hunter Wallace each had two assists, and Savery, Ibrahima, and Kyle Proctor had one each. Chase Gulick won just over half his faceoffs, winning 14 of his 26 attempts, and picked up eight ground balls while doing so to lead the team. Justin Eischen led the Bombers in caused turnovers with two, and Andrew Minard got the start in net for the Bombers, making 12 saves.

The Bombers got out to a great start in the first quarter, getting a goal from Niebuhr a couple of minutes into the game, and another from Sramac after the Cardinals responded to lead 2–1 after the first five minutes. The goals kept coming for Ithaca, as Sramac scored again less than a minute later off an assist from Wallace. In the final five minutes, the Bombers went on a 3–0 run in less than two minutes, getting goals from Niebuhr twice, and Erickson once, to make the score 6–1 at the end of the first quarter.

However, the script was flipped in the second quarter, as the Cardinals outscored Ithaca 6-1. Matthew Kemmis started the run for St. John Fisher with a man-up goal in the first two minutes, and then scored again with eight minutes left. The Cardinals also had a 3–0 run that spanned about two minutes, getting goals from Keaton Piconi, Samuel Miller, and Colin Blakeslee to tie the game at 6–6. Griffin Dautrich put the Cardinals up with 2:36 left in the half, but Savery evened it with just over a minute left, making the game tied 7–7 heading into halftime.

Savery put the Bombers back in the lead right out of the gate, but Piconi evened the score again less than a minute later. Kemmis and Timmy Salit scored for the Cardinals, putting them up by two halfway through the frame, but Ibrahima got one back a couple of minutes later. Ethan Kesselring scored a man-up goal for St. John Fisher that was answered by a Sramac goal with under two minutes to go, but the Cardinals got a late goal from Brady Mason to restore their two-goal lead heading into the final frame.

The Cardinals scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter in the first five minutes, making it a difficult task for the Bombers to make up ground. Sramac and Erickson scored with just over six minutes to go, but the Bombers were unable to put together a run to make up the ground they fell behind. Erickson and Niebuhr scored in the final five minutes, but the Bombers ultimately fell 16–14.

St. John Fisher outshot Ithaca 42–34, and also turned the ball over less 16–23. Defensively, faceoffs were even with each team winning 17, but the Bombers held a slight edge in ground balls with 37–33.

The Bombers wrap up their 2023 regular season with a road contest against RPI at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 at Troy, New York.
