Men’s Lacrosse Falls in Overtime to No. 14 Union

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Ithaca College men's lacrosse team lost to No. 14 Union College in overtime on Saturday afternoon, falling by the score of 10–9. The Bombers drop to 7–6 on the season and 2–4 in Liberty League play.

Ithaca was led offensively by Charlie Niebuhr with five goals, as well as Hunter Wallace, John Sramac, Kyle Savery, and Sekou Ibrahima adding a goal as well. Sramac and Savery also recorded an assist, and Drew Turner did as well. Wallace and Demetri Lowry tied for the team-lead in ground balls with four, and Jared Sedlock had three caused turnovers to lead the Bombers. Ryan LaForty was in goal for Ithaca, making 19 saves for a .655 save percentage.

Before the game, the Bombers recognized their six seniors for senior day, LaForty, Jake Erickson, Wesley Hudkins, Billy Winters, Andrew Tinnesz, and Justin Eischen. The Bombers got off to a quick start after losing the opening faceoff, they forced a turnover followed by a clear, and Niebuhr scored 1:35 into the game. The Dutchmen were able to respond, scoring with under 12 minutes to go to tie the game at 1–1. Union was able to jump out in front almost three minutes later with a goal from Archie McEvoy. As the quarter was winding down, Union had a couple of chances while on the man-advantage, but LaForty stood tall and allowed the Bombers to clear the ball. Shortly after getting setup in the offensive zone, Niebuhr scored on a goal assisted by Turner to tie the game 2–2 with 42 seconds left.

The Bombers started the quarter on a good note, stopping a couple of chances for the Dutchmen and scoring three minutes into the quarter, with Niebuhr completing the hat trick in the second quarter. However, from that point on, it was all Dutchmen in the second quarter. Clayton Arcuri tied the game less than a minute later, and Union scored a pair of goals a minute apart with 7:56 and 6:56 left to take the lead. In the final moments of the half, the Dutchmen established zone time in the offensive zone, and after nearly two minutes of possession time, Jake Mabardy put Union up 6–3 going into halftime.

Ithaca was able to make up some ground in the third quarter, scoring the first two goals of the frame. Around the midway point of the quarter, Ibrahima scored, and Sramac tallied a couple minutes later to cut Union's lead to 6–5. The Dutchmen responded though, getting both goals back in just over two minutes. Both teams scored twice in the quarter, and the fourth began with Union ahead 8–5.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, the Bombers got on the board thanks to Niebuhr for his fourth goal of the game. Niebuhr scored again just over a minute later, and the Bombers trailed by just one with 6:15 left. Ithaca was able to tie it with over five minutes left after Wallace scored, but Mabardy put the Dutchmen right back in the lead with 4:38 left. With 1:13 left in regulation, the Bombers tied the game late from a goal from Savery, sending the game to overtime tied at 9–9. The Dutchmen won the faceoff at the beginning of the overtime period, and the Bombers never gained possession, as Union scored the winning goal with 2:59 left.

The Dutchmen led in shots, 49–35, and shots on goal, 29–22, but Ithaca had less turnovers, 14–17. Defensively, Union led in ground balls, 31–19, faceoffs, 21–2, but the Bombers held the advantage in saves, 19–13.

The Bombers look to stop their four-game skid with a rescheduled game against St. John Fisher University at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 25th in Rochester, New York.
