TROY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team outhit RPI in both games of Friday's Liberty League doubleheader, but were unable to claw a run in either as they were shutout by the Engineers 3-0 in the first game and lost 2-0 in the nightcap.
Game 1: RPI 3, Ithaca 0 (F)
Despite outhitting the Engineers by a 5-3 margin, the home team struck first for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and added an insurance effort in the sixth to score the opening 3-0 win over Ithaca. Alex Ledger drove in a pair when she hit a bases clearing double to center field.
Riley Piromalli settled in after that as she induced a ground ball to end the first.
Piromalli racked up seven strikeouts in the loss as the final run was scored on another double, this time off the bat of RPI's Callista Adorno who drove in Erin Askins who opened the frame with a lead-off walk. The Bombers ended up stranding five runners on base as
Sela Scheinman,
Allison Dell'Orto,
Olivia Comolli,
Tava Kasper and
Belle de Oliveira managed a hit apiece.
Game 2: RPI 2, Ithaca 0 (F)
Anna Cornell took the ball in the pitching circle for the second game and she spun it well scattering just four hits across six innings. She ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning after giving up a lead-off double to Maddy Brooks. She went on to advance to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Erin Askins who would go onto score on an IC error, which made it 2-0.
The Bombers nearly got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as
Sela Scheinman clubbed a one-out double in the center field gap. Ithaca was unable to move her over as the RPI pitcher got back-to-back fly outs. They would attempt another rally, this time in the top of the seventh as with two-outs
Jessie Lopez doubled but Brooke Sroczinski got Scheinman to strike out for the final out of the game.
Ithaca College (14-9-1, 2-3 LL) will look to return to its winning ways tomorrow afternoon in a road conference doubleheader against Skidmore. Game times are slated for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
