Men’s Lacrosse Stumbles Against SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Ithaca College men's lacrosse team suffered a loss against SUNY Cortland Wednesday afternoon, falling by the score of 13–7. The Bombers drop to 7–5 on the season.

Five Bombers scored for Ithaca today, with Kyle Savery and Tim Rogers both scoring two, and Brendan Occhino, Jack Pastore, and Charlie Niebuhr scoring once. Niebuhr and Occhino also recorded an assist, as well as Kyle Proctor, Jake Erickson, Andrew Tinnesz, and Graham Brady. Chase Gulick won 11 of his 17 faceoffs while Chris Sohl won four of his seven attempts. Defensively, Hunter Wallace collected nine ground balls and Demetri Lowry picked up five, and Lowry also led the team in caused turnovers with three. Ryan LaForty started the game and made five saves, and Andrew Minard recorded six saves in the second half.

The Bombers got out to a good start right out of the gate, as Savery scored on a goal assisted by Erickson 52 seconds in, but the Red Dragons responded and then took the lead with 10 minutes left in the quarter. The Bombers would trail the rest of the game after Tyler Starrett scored a goal for Cortland with under eight minutes left. A couple of minutes later, Niebuhr scored a man-up goal off an assist from Savery to cut the deficit in half, but Cortland answered with a goal from Troy Morris with three minutes left. With six seconds left in the quarter, Klay Stuver gave the Red Dragons a late goal to make their lead 5–2 heading into the second quarter.

Ithaca had a couple of chances to trim the deficit early in the quarter but couldn't take advantage of the man-up opportunity. They did get back on the board with 11 minutes left as Occhino scored, which was his first career goal as a Bomber, off an assist from Niebuhr, making it 5–3. However, the Red Dragons held the Bombers off the scoresheet the rest of the period and scoring four straight goals themselves over the last eight minutes, going into halftime with a 9–3 lead.

The second half didn't fare any better for the Bombers, as they were outscored 3–0 in the third quarter and unable to make up any ground. Stuver scored for the Red Dragons in the opening minute, as both teams traded chances over the next ten minutes, but neither could score. Finally, with just under five minutes to go in the third, Stuver found the back of the net again for Cortland. This time with seven seconds left, the Red Dragons got another crushing goal in the final moments of the third from Dante Yacavone, putting Cortland up 12–3 to end the third.

The Red Dragons' lead hit double digits in the beginning of the fourth with a goal from Starrett 40 seconds into the quarter. Ithaca finally broke a 37:17 goal drought when Rogers scored with 4:01 left in the game. The Bombers scored three goals in the final two minutes, from Rogers, Savery, and Pastore, making the final score 13–7.

The Bombers led in shots and shots on goal, 53–32 and 27–24 respectively, but only went 1–5 on man-up opportunities. Ithaca led in faceoffs 15–9, ground balls 42–28, and caused turnovers 8–5, but trailed in saves 20–11.

The next game for the Bombers is their final home game of the 2023 season against No. 14 Union College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 22nd at Higgins Stadium.
