Baseball Splits with Union as IC Takes Game Two, 23-5

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team split its doubleheader at Union College on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchmen took game one with a thrilling walk off victory and the Bombers blasted away in game two with five homeruns and 23 runs.
 
Game 1, Ithaca College 7, Union College 8
 
The Dutchmen took game one with a nine-inning walk-off to overcome a late deficit. The Bombers took a 6–3 lead into the eighth inning before the dutchmen turned the game around, scoring five in the final two frames.
 
The Dutchmen took an early lead with a solo homerun off of Lambert in the bottom of the second inning. The Bombers' bats came to life in the top of the fourth, getting on the board with two runs for a 2–1 lead. The Bombers put runners on first and third with singles by Riley Brawdy and Ryan Laubscher, and a fielder's choice by Colin Shashaty. Connor Pederson tied the game with an infield single, scoring Laubscher from third. With two outs, Collin Shashaty scored on a passes ball to put the Bombers in front.
 
The Dutchmen quickly took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with its second home run of the game. This time, a two-run homer off Lambert for a 3–2 lead. Garret Callaghan answered for the Bombers with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, bringing home Collin Feeney to tie the game at 3–3.
 
The Bombers continued to stay hot at the plate into the sixth inning, going for three runs and a 6–3 lead. Brawdy and Shashaty led off the inning with consecutive singles and each advanced from a balk. Pederson brough both runners home with a single to left field. Ethan Rothstein drove in Pederson with another single to left field.
 
The Dutchmen put the pressure on the Bombers, making it a one-run ballgame in the bottom of the eighth. The Dutchmen added two more runs with another two-run homer by Jono Santos for his second of the day, cutting the lead to 6–5.
 
Louis Fabbo gave the Bombers an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a single to left field to score Collin Feeney. The Dutchmen answered again with its fourth homerun of the game, a solo shot to cut the Bombers' lead to 7–6. Matt Chase earned two outs for the Bombers before the Dutchmen began to rally. Union tied the game at 7–7 with a single right side, advancing a runner to third.
 
Kyle Lambert threw seven solid innings on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Pederson had a great first game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Collin Feeney had three hits and two runs scored at the plate, with Bradwy and Shashaty also picking up multiple hits in the game.
 
Game 2, Ithaca College 23, Union College 5.
The Bombers exploded at the plate in game two, putting 23 runs across the plate. The Bombers hit five homeruns, including two from Louis Fabbo to cap off a nine-run second inning. On the mound, Colin Leyner tossed five innings, allowing just a two-run homer in the second. 
 
The Bombers got out to a fast start in game two of the doubleheader with two runs in the top of the first inning. Fabbo and Callaghan earned back-to-back singles with one out to get a runner in scoring position. Matt Curtis doubled in the next at-bat, bringing both runs home for the early 2–0.
 
The Dutchmen tied the game up at 2–2 with a two-run second inning. Santos hit his third homerun on the day, a two-run homerun to left field.
 
Fabbo responded with a solo shot to right field to take the lead back in the top of the third. Callaghan singled in the next at-bat, and a double by Curtis put runners on second and third for Brawdy to single them home for a 5–2 lead. The big inning continued with runs in three consecutive at-bats. Ben Landis, Rothstein and Feeney each earned an RBI with three straight base hits to extend the lead to 8–2. Fabbo came around the order for his second at-bat of the inning, blasting away for his second homerun of the inning to clear the bases for an 11–2 lead.
 
Laubscher gave the Bombers a double-digit lead with a leadoff homer in the fourth to make it 12–2. Colin Leyner hit his stride on the mound after the two-run homer, tossing scoreless frames over the next three innings.
 
Callaghan got in on the fun with another long ball in the fifth inning. His blast was a three-run shot to right field, scoring Fabbo and Rothstein. In the next at-bat, Curtis smashed one to left-centerfield for back-to-back homeruns and a 16–2 lead. In the sixth, Josh Kaplan added two more runs with a two-RBI single to score Rothstein and Nicholas Cutaia.
 
The Bombers continued its great game two, loading the bases with no outs in the seventh. Feeney was hit by a pitch, bringing in a run. Cutaia and David Cifronelli hit back-to-back singles in the next two at-bats to each bring in a run. Kaplan brought another run home with a single and the Bombers scored a fifth run from a fielder's choice to make the score 23–2. The Dutchmen got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 23–5.
 
Fabbo finished the day 3-for-3 with four RBI and four runs scored. Callaghan was 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Curtis finished with three hits and three RBI. Laubscher and Rothstein each had three hits and added an RBI. Kaplan added two more RBI for the Bombers. Zane Grimes tossed a scoreless inning in relief, striking out two batters.
 
The Bombers currently have a 17–11 record and a 7–4 record in the Liberty League. The Bombers travel to Oswego State for a 4 p.m. game on Tuesday.
