SCRANTON, Pa. – The nationally ranked No. 12 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team hit the road for the first time in 2023 and improved to 3-1 on the season with a 12-8 victory at the University of Scranton on Wednesday afternoon, March 8 at Weiss Field.
The Bombers trailed, 6-4, at the half and 7-5 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter, but scored seven straight goals over a 22-minute span to pull off the win. Scranton scored the final goal of the contest with 1:29 left on the clock.
IC tallied the first goal of the contest as
Maizy Veitch found the back of the net in the opening minute. The Royals responded with four straight goals in a five-minute stretch to build a 4-1 lead, but the Bombers closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals in less than a minute from
Lexi Kellish and Veitch to make it a 4-3 difference after 15 minutes of action.
It took nearly nine minutes into the second quarter for either team to score, which happened to be Scranton at the 6:32 mark. Ithaca answered with 3:39 to go as Chole Nordyke scored unassisted, but Scranton closed out the half with the final goal with just 1:21 left.
IC pulled to within 6-5 on an advantage goal from
Caroline Wise less than three minutes into the third period. Scranton went back up by two less than a minute later, but it was all Bombers from there.
Sydney Phillips scored on another advantage opportunity off a pass from Wise at the 9:11 mark and then Nordyke tied the game at 7-7 with 8:31 remaining. Phillips notched another goal at the 4:36 mark and Veitch beat the buzzer to send IC to the final quarter with an 9-7 lead.
Nordyke put the Bombers up by three goals at 10-7 with 9:17 to go in the contest and Veitch earned her fourth goal of the game off a feed from
Maddie Hall with just over three minutes to go.
Elizabeth Green would score IC's final goal of the contest with exactly two minutes on the clock.
Lexi Held picked up the win with 11 in 60 minutes of action.
The Bombers open Liberty League play this Saturday, March 10 at home against the University of Rochester. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
