ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Ithaca College men's lacrosse team hit the road for their first away game of the 2023 season and came out victorious against the Nazareth College Golden Flyers, winning 14–9.
The Bombers never trailed in the game, as the offense got going immediately with help from attackmen
John Sramac (four goals) and
Jake Erickson (three goals), and also midfielder
Connor Brumfield with two goals. Erickson finished with six points, Sramac with five, Brumfield with three, while attackman/midfielder
Jack Pastore and attackman
Kyle Proctor each had a goal and assist as well. Midfielder
Chase Gulick went 18–9 on faceoffs with 13 ground balls, and goalkeeper
Ryan LaForty made 13 saves on 22 shots on goal.
The Bombers jumped out to a blazing start, scoring six goals in the first 10 minutes. Attackman
Charlie Niebuhr got the scoring started just over a minute into the game, and midfielder
Drew Turner got on the board two minutes later. Sramac would follow that up with a goal, causing the Golden Flyers to call a timeout. However, that could not stop the Bombers offense, as Pastore scored under two minutes later, and Sramac would complete his hat trick with 6:45 left in the first quarter. Nazareth would finally find the back of the net with 4:35 left while on the man-advantage, ending Ithaca's 6–0 run to start the game. The teams would trade a goal each to end the frame, as Brumfield scored with two minutes left for the Bombers, and Jake Schroll answered for the Golden Flyers.
Keeping their foot on the gas, the Bombers got the opening goal of the second quarter just over a minute in, with Erickson getting on the scoresheet to put the Bombers up 8–2. Play would settle down as both defenses would force stops, but it would be over 10 minutes between goals before Sramac got his fourth of the game with 2:15 left before the half. The Golden Flyers did make a late push to close their deficit heading into the second half, scoring with a minute left, and getting one in right before the buzzer as well.
Keeping their surge going, the Golden Flyers came out of the break and scored the first two goals of the second half. Louis Cogliandro got the first one with under 12 minutes left, and Cogliandro would get another goal with just over seven minutes remaining. Ithaca's offense responded with 5:09 left, as
Sekou Ibrahima would be assisted by Erickson on a goal, and then Erickson would score 36 seconds later. In the final minute of the quarter, the Golden Eagles would get another late goal with 42 seconds left, as Quinn McKercher scored his third goal of the game.
Entering the fourth and final quarter with a four-goal lead, Erickson made it a 12–7 game with 12:36 left. The Golden Flyers made their last push of the game shortly after, as McKercher scored his fourth goal of the game, and his younger brother Braeden scored off an assist from Quinn. However, the Bombers quickly shut that down with goals from Proctor and Brumfield to extend the lead to 14–9. The score would hold for the final six minutes, as the Bombers spent their time in the offensive zone chewing up clock and shutting the Golden Flyers offense down.
Ithaca led in shots and shots on goal 38–31 and 30–22, and also faceoffs 18–9. The Golden Flyers picked up four more groundballs, leading 35–31. The Bombers improve to 3–0 on the season and have a quick turnaround for their next game against University of Scranton at 4 p.m. on March 10 at Scranton, Pennsylvania.
