BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Ithaca College women's track & field team posted 16 points on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Friday, March 10 as two members of the team posted second place finishes to earn All-America honors.
Logan Bruce set multiple school records on the day as she finished second in the pentathlon with 3748 points, to surpass her previous mark set earlier this year. Within the five events, Bruce posted a time of 8.58 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to earn 1000 points, which broke her own record in the event. She then competed in the high jump and cleared 1.58 meters to account for 712 points. In the third event, she posted a mark of 11.17 meters in the shot put, which resulted in 606 points. The fourth event was the long jump and Bruce posted a mark of 5.46 meters for 688 points. Her final event was the 800-meter run and she posted a time of 2:26.12 for 742 points.
In the middle of her shot put competition, Bruce had to race in the 60-meter hurdles prelim for a spot in tomorrow's final. She would finish fourth overall in the prelim as she bested her time from a few hours prior at 8.51 seconds to set another school standard.
Bruce will run in the final at 11:40 a.m. tomorrow morning.
Meghan Matheny was the national runner-up in the pole vault as she cleared 3.95 meters (12' 11.5") for her fifth career All-American performance. Matheny started the competition at 3.45 meters and cleared the bar on her first attempt. She then moved past 3.60 meters on her second try and surpassed 3.75 meters on the first run. Matheny then cruised past 3.80 and 3.85 meters to assure her spot on the podium. From there, she cleared 3.90 meters on her second run to move into the top three. After going over 3.95 meters, Matheny move to 4.00 meter and passed after her first try. Her championship ended at 4.05 meters.
Three other members of the team were in action on Friday as
Sara Altonen and
Martha Kemp-Neilson also competed in the pole vault and
Sara Brown entered the long jump.
Altonen placed 10th in the pole vault at 3.80 meters (12' 5.5"), while Kemp-Neilson was 14th at 3.60 meters (11' 9.75").
Brown concluded her indoor season in 19th overall in the long jump at 5.34 meters (17' 6.25").
