ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's basketball team returned to the Ben Light Gymnasium for the first time this season, losing to No. 11/7 Trinity 61-50. This was the first-ever meeting between the Bombers and the Bantams, as the Bombers record dropped to 1-1.
Graduate student guard Junie Dickson led the Bombers with 13 points along with sophomore guard
Zoraida Icabalceta who netted 11 points and dished out a team-high three assists on the day.
The first quarter started as a back-and-forth affair, as the teams tied at 10 for the first six minutes of the frame. Ithaca then moved ahead of Trinity thanks to a seven-point run before the final minute of the quarter to jump out to a 17-10 lead before Trinity would respond. Ithaca capitalized on free throws in the quarter, going 5-of-6 from the stripe to end the first with a 19-12 lead. Ithaca' strong free-throw performances came from Icabalceta who went 5-of-6 from the line and junior forward
Anya Watkins who went 5-of-8 on the evening.
After the Bombers took a 10-point lead in the second quarter to go up 28-18, Trinity would flip the script on Ithaca from the first quarter, going on a late run of their own. The Bantams scored seven unanswered over the final three minutes of the quarter to trim the Trinity deficit to 28-23. Ithaca would end the Bantams run with 10 seconds left on the clock on an Icabalceta layup to put 30 on the board for the Bombers. Trinity would sink two free throws at the end of the half to trim the Bombers lead to 30-25 entering the break.
Trinity would come out of the halftime break with the momentum still on the Bantams side, tying the contest at 30 just two minutes into the third quarter. The Bantams would then take its first lead since the first two minutes of the game as part of a third quarter where the Bombers and Trinity would trade scoring possessions. Trinity would pull away late in the quarter, outsourcing the Bombers 23-9 in the quarter to lead 48-39 at the break. The fourth quarter was much of the same, as the Trinity defense held the Bombers to 11 points and just two field goals in the final quarter, as Trinity scored 13 of their own to end the game.
Trinity would end up benefiting from Ithaca fouls, going 16 of 18 from the foul line during the game, as both teams averaged just around 35% from the field.
The Bombers will travel to Boston, Mass. for the Emmanuel Tip-off Tournament this weekend. Ithaca will start off by facing FDU-Florham on Saturday with tip-off scheduled at 1 p.m.
