Men's Soccer Explodes For Two Second Half Goals to Down Clarkson

POTSDAM, NY– After a disappointing performance against Hamilton last week, the Ithaca College men's soccer team had a bounce back effort against the Clarkson Golden Knights as they took this contest by a final score of 2-1. Ithaca improved to 5-3-1 while Clarkson fell to 6-4.

Despite three total goals, this game started off slow as neither team was able to find their offensive rhythm and both defensives were stingy. Clarkson had the first shot of the game from Kyle Otis that was stopped by Ithaca's goalkeeper Johannes Berghahn, but Ithaca's Reefe Harrison was able to answer with a shot of his own that was turned away by Clarkson's goalkeeper, Josh Morelli.

Andrew Kusek and Gustav Bauerle both had opportunities that were turned away by Josh Morelli. The first half came to an end with neither team scoring and both keepers maintaining their ground in the net.

The second half, however, was a very different story. Just six and a half minutes in, Ithaca's forward Landon Hellwig was able to capitalize on a beautiful goal from Alex Cabeca. This marker gave Ithaca the 1-0 lead over their Liberty League rivals.

Ithaca's momentum quickly came to an end however, as Clarkson answered within seven minutes. Tayte Wong was able to kick home the equalizer from Christian Silvano to even the score at one goal apiece.

The scoring frenzy continued this time for the Bombers as Alex Cabeca scored an assisted goal from Landon Hellwig as the two Bombers both assisted and scored goals from each other. Cabeca netted the eventual game-winner in the 64th minute as on the counterattack he was sent through and had a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper and skillfully dribbled past him and slotted the ball into the open net.

This game got chippy in the end as the arch-rivals continued to play hard through the last whistle, but it was Ithaca able to come out on top 2-1 getting goals from Landon Hellwig and Alex Cabeca.

Hellwig and Cabeca led the Bombers with three and two shot attempts respectively and Johannes Berghahn had five saves in his third win of the season.

Ithaca will continue their Liberty League road trip on Friday, October 13 as they travel to Schenectady, N.Y. to take on the Union Dutchmen with kickoff at 4p.m.
