ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey extended its winning streak to five straight games as the Bombers defeated SUNY Geneseo, 1-0, at Higgins Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Bombers improve to 8-3 on the year, while Geneseo falls to 6-4.
It was a scoreless first half in an abnormally hot October afternoon as Geneseo outshot Ithaca, 5-4, but the Bombers held a 3-1 edge in corners over the opening 30 minutes. Geneseo recorded all five of its shots in the first quarter and IC answered with its four attempts in the second period.
Both goalkeepers notched a save in the first half.
The third quarter also concluded with no score and the Bombers went ahead of Geneseo in shots, 7-6, but none were on target.
Ithaca tallied the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in regulation as
Natalie Descalso sent in a high cross immediately following an attempted clear by Geneseo's to
Catherine Papa, who batted in the waist-high pass for her second goal of the season.
Geneseo had one final chance to send the game into extra time but
Alex Clough made a save with 23 seconds left in regulation.
IC finished the day with an 11-9 edge in shots and 7-3 advantage in corners.
Clough recorded her fourth shutout in five games to improve to 7-2 on the season.
The Bombers are back in action on Saturday, October 7 for a 3 p.m. Liberty League game against St. Lawrence.
