Field Hockey Extends Winning Streak to Six with 2-1 Victory over St. Lawrence

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team remained perfect in Liberty League play and extended its winning streak to six straight as the Bombers defeated St. Lawrence University, 2-1, on Saturday at Higgins Stadium. Ithaca is now 9-3 on the year and 3-0 in the Liberty League.

St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead 6:25 into the game as Caroline Hamilton found Mayson Blondek on the first shot of the contest.

The Bombers had a chance to knot things up at 1-1 with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter, but back-to-back shots from Juliana Valli were saved.

Ithaca dominated the second quarter, outshooting the Saints, 9-0, but all three shots that were on goal were saved to keep it was 1-0. IC also earned three corners in the period.

IC tied the game at 1-1 within the opening minute of the third quarter as a cross from Natalie Descalso was tipped by Juliana Valli and then glanced off a St. Lawrence defender into the goal.

Early in the fourth quarter, Ithaca peppered the St. Lawrence defense with 11 shots on goal and seven corners in a three-minute span, but Cara Vredenberg was up to the tall task and saved every attempt to keep the game at 1-1.

Ithaca finally sent one past Vredenberg with 8:01 left in regulation as Brenna Schoenfeld sent the corner insert over to Descalso, who ripped the shot off a Saints' defender into the back of the net to give IC a 2-1 lead.

From there, St. Lawrence had one final chance with a corner with three minutes to play, but the ensuing shot was blocked.

Over the final 15 minutes, Ithaca took 16 shots and earned eight corners to finish the day with a 35-5 disparity in shots and 13-3 in corners against the Saints.

Alex Clough improved to 8-2 on the year with one save on the day.

The Bombers remain at home next Tuesday, October 10 for a 4 p.m. game against New Paltz.
