ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team put together a dominant effort on Tuesday as they scored a pair of second half goals enroute to a 2-0 win over St. Lawrence. The Bombers won their first-ever match playing on Bertino Field at Butterfield Stadium as they outshot the visitors 24-4 and possessed the ball for most of the 90 minutes on the turfed field. With the win, Ithaca advances to the Liberty League semifinals where they will take on the No. 2 seeded RIT Tigers later this week.
Ithaca controlled the possession through the first 45 minutes of this match but were unable to find the back of the net. The Bombers ripped the first shot attempt in the 7
th minute when
Rosie Bostian forced the St. Lawrence goalkeeper Keely Snode into a save. IC ended up outshooting the Saints 9-0 in the opening half as Snode ended up making four saves for the Saints.
The Bombers thought they finally broke the 0-0 tie in the 66
th minute with a
Julia Cascone effort that ricocheted off the inside of the post and into the back of the net, but officials ruled that the ball went fully out of bounds along the byline before Cascone unloaded the strike. Ithaca continued to pressure the St. Lawrence defenders and were finally rewarded in the 72
nd minute when
Allie McCabe scored her second goal of the season, both coming against the Saints. Off a corner kick, McCabe settled a ball that hit off a defender and sent a low shot past the diving Keely Snode.
Just under a minute after the Bombers went up 1-0, goalkeeper
Grace Hickey made an outstanding diving save off a corner kick denying Emma Casey who was looking to slot the ball into the upper left-hand corner. It proved to be the most dangerous opportunity for the Saints who were limited to four shots, all of which came in the second half. Hickey finished the match with two saves.
Ithaca added an insurance effort in the 83
rd minute on a lovely combination play from
Rosie Bostian and
Ella Shorkey. Bostian sent a through ball in which Shorkey bent her run to stay onside and showed her composure as she bested Snode on the one-on-one opportunity to make it 2-0.
Rosie Bostian led all players with five shots as she placed four of them on target. Also finishing with two or more shots was
Kaitlyn Weis,
Zara Nourie,
Sarah Sinnott and
Allison Heft.
Ithaca College (10-2-4) will travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on RIT on Friday, November 3. This semifinal matchup will kick off at 4 p.m. as the Bombers look to continue making noise within postseason play.
