Field Hockey Claims Regular Season Title with 2-1 Win at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team secured its second regular season Liberty League championship in the past three seasons as the Bombers defeated Vassar College, 2-1, at Weinberg Field on October 22. Ithaca is now 13-4 on the season and concludes its Liberty League slate with a 6-1 record. IC will finish out the regular season on October 28 at No. 25 Ursinus.

The Bombers will host a semifinal contest at Higgins Stadium on Friday, November 3 with a time still to be determined. IC will draw the winner of the No.4/5 seed game, which will take place on October 31. If the Bombers win that semifinal game, they will also host the championship matchup on Sunday, November 5.

Vassar controlled play with a 16-5 advantage in shots and 6-2 edge in corners, but the Bombers made the most of their offensive opportunities and scored on a penalty stroke to come away with the victory.

The Brewers scored the first goal of the contest as Tori Baker scored in the 20th minute, but IC knotted the game at 1-1 as Meara Bury scored on her second penalty stroke of the season at the 26:14 mark of the first half.

IC was unable to take a shot in the third quarter and Vassar fired off three shots, with one on target, which was saved by Alex Clough.

Clough made six saves on the day to improve to 12-3 on the season.

Vassar had the first chance of the fourth quarter with a shot that went wide less than two minutes in, then IC drew a corner attempt in the 52nd minute and cashed in as Brenna Schoenfeld sent the insert to Emma Garver, who passed the ball over to Natalie Descalso for the eventual game-winning goal.

The Brewers attempted a late comeback with three more shots over the final four minutes, but two were off target and Clough made another save.

IC plays Ursinus at 1 p.m. on October 28 in Collegeville, Pa.
