First Half Goal Leads Women’s Soccer to 1-0 Win over Union

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team began its back-to-back Liberty League weekend on Friday afternoon at Carp Wood Field with a 1-0 victory against Union College. The Bombers are now 8-2-1 on the season and 4-1 in the league, while Union drops to 6-4-2 and 2-2-1.

The Bombers applied pressure on the Garnet Chargers right from the start and fired off three shots on target in a 125-second span in the ninth minute from Rosie Bostian, Ally Stanton and Julia Cascone, but all were saved. Bostian had a breakaway chance and Union's goalkeeper came out to challenge and knocked the shot away. Stanton was quickly on the rebound and sent a shot towards frame that glanced off the post and was sent out by the goalie once again to put her out of position and Cascone's follow was booted away by a defender.

With 10:42 left in the first half, Ithaca was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards out. Allison Heft sent the into the box and found Sarah Sinnott for a header to give IC a 1-0 lead.

The Bombers continued to control play for the opening 45 minutes and would go on to outshoot Union, 11-1, while holding a 4-0 edge in corners. Rachel Berliner had six saves in the first half for the Garnet Chargers.

In the second half, Ithaca still maintained possession for a majority of the 45 minutes. IC recorded five more shots, with two more on target, but more importantly kept Union from producing any threatening scoring chances to preserve the 1-0 victory.

Union did take four shots and one was saved by Grace Hickey. The Garnet Chargers did manage to fire off two more attempts in the waning minutes but nearly were on frame.

Hickey made two saves in the win to improve to 9-2-1 on the season.

The Bombers finished with a 16-5 disparity in shots and 11-1 in corners.
