Women’s Soccer Battle Nazareth to a 2-2 Tie

ROCHESTER, N.Y – The Ithaca College women's soccer team came alive within the final 24 minutes of the match and dug themselves out of a 2-0 hole and battled to the 2-2 draw on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. With the tie, the Bombers move to 3-1-2 and Nazareth is now 1-1-3.

The Golden Flyers got the scoring started in the 16th minute when Tatum Overton nodded the ball into the back of the net. Madison Knowles played a diagonal crossing pass into the box and Overton got on the end of it for her first goal of the season.

Nazareth maintained its 1-0 lead through the halftime break. It was another cross that got the best of Ithaca as the Golden Flyers made it 2-0 at the 53:26 mark when Geena Morotti whipped in a ball into the 18-yard box that ricocheted off an IC defender and then was once again headed into the back of the net, this time from McKayla Hughes.

Trailing 2-0, the Bombers offensive attack picked it up and they were rewarded at the 66:24 mark when Julia Cascone setup Delaney Rutan who slid the ball into the back of the net to cut the deficit to one. Continuing the offensive pressure, the Bombers scored just seven minutes later as this time Megan Buttinger provided a beautiful assist that was finished off by Rosie Bostian for her third goal of the season.

It took a fantastic stop in the 84th minute by the Nazareth goalkeeper as Anika Monofort tipped a free kick attempt off the right foot of Julia Cascone into the crossbar to deny the scoring chance. The score remained level at the final whistle.

Junior goalkeeper Claire Reader made a match-best 13 saves. Ithaca outshot the Golden Flyers by a 23-21 margin but placed just nine shots on target.

The Bombers will return to the friendly confines of Carp Wood Field for their next match on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. IC will host St. John Fisher University in another non-conference contest.
