ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team got off to just the start that they envisioned winning their 2022 season opener at Elmira College by a 3-0 score. The Bombers got on the scoreboard with a first half goal from
Rachel Richards and never looked back as they added two more goals during the final 45 minutes of action.
The Bombers controlled the majority of possession from the opening whistle and their defense was able to shut down every offensive opportunity that Elmira had on Thursday evening.
Kaelyn Fernandez whizzed the first shot of the season high and above the crossbar at the 2:01 mark. Ithaca continued to pepper the opposing goalkeeper Navaeh Winston's net as she was forced into two-straight saves by
Julia Cascone, which was then followed by
Rosie Bostian.
It wasn't until the 25
th minute that Ithaca finally found its breakthrough as senior defender
Rachel Richards netted her third career goal. The Bombers were patient in the 18-yard box and after a few passes within the box,
Julia Cascone slotted a pass to Richards who found the bottom right corner of the net.
The Bombers carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime as they also held an 11-2 advantage in shots with Navaeh Winston collecting five first half saves for the Eagles. IC appeared the better conditioned team in the second half as they also utilized their deeper bench with 16 student-athletes seeing time on the pitch from head coach
Mindy Quigg's bench. Ithaca outshot Elmira 19-1 during the final 45 minutes, while also having a 7-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
It was once again solid build up play that created the second goal that was scored on Thursday. This time it was
Ava Detorie that fed a pass across the goalmouth that was then finished off by
Megan Buttinger in the 59
th minute.
The Bombers would then make it 3-0 as sophomore
