NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team put together another solid performance on Saturday, this time on the road as they were victorious over Mount Saint Mary College by a 4-1 final score. The teams battled the elements as it began raining just mere minutes into the match as there was also lengthy lightning delay during the first half.
It took just over three minutes for the Bombers attack to record its first shot attempt of the afternoon as
Megan Buttinger ripped an attempt from within the 18-yard box, but it sailed left of the goal frame. After regaining possession in the middle of the pitch, a through ball released Delaney Ruton down the right side and her pass across the goalmouth was fired into the back of the net by junior
Ally Stanton. The goal was the first of the season and first with the Bombers for the King Philip Regional product who transferred to Ithaca from Wesleyan.
The Bombers nearly doubled their lead when
Kaelyn Fernandez saw her shot attempt saved by Christina Kakavas that forced a corner kick. On the ensuring attempt,
Rosie Bostian saw her shot stopped by the Knights goalie. The match would then go into a lightning delay in the 20
th minute of the first half.
Once play resumed it did not take long before Ithaca was able to add an insurance effort as
Ally Stanton scored her second goal of the match as this effort was once again assisted by Delaney Ruton. The Bombers carried the 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.
Ithaca continued to press offensively and they were rewarded at the 57:26 mark when
Clare Sunderland found the back of net for her first goal of the 2022 season. She was assisted by
Devin Sylvia who recorded her first collegiate point. The Knights had a response just a little over two minutes later when Kaitlin Hansen made it 3-1.
The final scoring effort occurred just before the final whistle as the Bombers earned a corner kick chance in the 89
th minute.
Rosie Bostian slotted the ball into the back of the net at the 89:20 mark for an unassisted goal. Junior goalkeeper
Claire Reader made a pair of saves in the IC victory. Bostian led all players on the field recording six shot attempts, including three on target.
Ithaca College will now have a week to prepare for the Fredonia Tournament where they will take on Oswego State (September 9) and Fredonia (September 10).
