Women’s Lacrosse Upset by St. Lawrence in Top-25 Battle, 17-16

CANTON, NY – In a Liberty League battle between two undefeated nationally ranked foes, the No. 4 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 17-16 loss to No. 25 St. Lawrence on the road on Friday evening. While leading 12-7 at the half, the Bombers were outscored 9-5 in the final two quarters as St. Lawrence rallied late to mount a huge comeback to pull off the upset. IC is now 6-1 on the season following its first regular season loss while the Saints improve to a perfect 7-0.

Inside the Box Score
  • Grad student Madison Boutureira and sophomore Maizy Veitch paced Ithaca's offense with five points each while sophomore Caroline Wise and senior Megan Motkowski both sent home three goals of their own.
  • Offense was the narrative of the first half for IC, as the team outshot St. Lawrence 21-11 and forced six more turnovers.
  • The second half was a different story, however, as the Saints dominated in the shots-on-goal department 16-to-9 and scored three unanswered points in the final six minutes to cap off the victory.
  • Rachel Burke led the St. Lawrence with six goals and Callie O'Neil followed with five of her own, including the game-winning shot with just over a minute left on the clock.

How it Happened
  • IC took a quick 3-1 lead by way of Lauren White who anchored the offensive attack by tallying back-to-back goals to pull the Bombers ahead.
  • Up 5-4 with six seconds remaining, Boutuereira charged the net and slapped a goal to the left of the goalkeeper to put an exclamation point on the first quarter.
  • Alexa Ritchie went on a brief scoring spree in the second, slicing two goals and two assists. Boutuereira followed up with a hat trick late in the stanza, firing a goal with just over two minutes remaining to give Ithaca its largest lead of the contest and lead 11-7.
  • St. Lawrence owned the bulk of the second half, outscoring the Bombers 8-5 and slowing down their potent offensive attack. With just under five minutes remaining in regulation, O'Neil netted the equalizer for the Saints to tie the game at 16-16.
  • With 1:19 to go, O'Neil stormed down the field and snuck a laser right past Bomber goalie Kayla Howley to win it 17-16.

Ithaca College will aim to keep its undefeated season alive tomorrow afternoon when the team stays on the road and travels to Potsdam, NY to square off against Clarkson University. First whistle is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
