Softball Swept on the Road Suffering Setbacks to Guilford College

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Ithaca College softball team suffered a pair of road defeats on Thursday to Guilford College. The Quakers shutout IC 7-0 in the first game and then held on for the 9-7 win in the nightcap despite multiple Bombers' comeback attempts. The pair of losses drops Ithaca to 4-6 overall while Guilford improved to 8-8.

GUILFORD 7, ITHACA 0
The Quakers scored in the bottom of the first inning plating the opening run on an RBI single to the gap in right center field. Riley Piromalli got herself out of the jam by inducing an inning ending double play.

Guilford maintained the 1-0 advantage until the third frame when they exploded for four more runs on five hits and were assisted in the inning by an IC fielding error. Shiloh Gray was lights out in the pitching circle for the Quakers as she silenced the Ithaca bats and finished with a no-hitter. She finished with six strikeouts and improved to 5-5 on the season. They added two insurance runs to go up 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning off Melody Kappel who came into the game in relief of Piromalli.

Guilford 9, Ithaca 7
Guilford College struck first in the bottom of the first inning, but the Bombers responded in the next half inning tying it up at 1-1 when Kira Flegenheimer ripped an RBI single up the middle of the diamond. The Quakers had an immediate response in the bottom half of the frame plating six runs on six hits, while also chasing Anna Cornell from the pitching circle.

Trailing 7-1, the Bombers scored their second run of the game when Kailey Collins drove in in Hudson Hassler on a sacrifice fly. Guilford matched that run with two of its own in the bottom of the third to build the 9-2 lead.

The Bombers scored the final five runs of the game by plating two in the fourth and fifth innings, while notching a run in the sixth as well. Allison Dell'Orto hit a big two-out double that scored the two runs that made it 9-4. IC scored an unearned run to open the fifth before plating the other on a Daniella Mulvey RBI fielder's choice.

The final run of the game was scored when Hudson Hassler scored on a wild pitch. She reached base to begin the sixth inning when she singled up the middle. Hassler finished the 2-for-3 at the plate.

Next up, Ithaca College returns to action on Friday with its first game against Muhlenberg College at 11 a.m. followed by matchup against No. 2 Salisbury University. Both games will be played on the Parker Complex in Salisbury, Maryland.
