Tobia, Mikula Reach Podium as No. 18 Men’s Track & Field Sits Third at NCAA Championships

RESULTS

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
In what was arguably one of the best days in Ithaca College men's track & field history, two members of the team earned All-America honors and two more advanced to tomorrow's final at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships at the JDL Fast Track. Ithaca heads into the final day of the championships in third place with 12 points.

Mikula, the national runner-up at the 2021 Outdoor Championships, entered competition at 4.50 meters and breezed through his first heights on the initial run (4.50, 4.65, 4.75, 4.80 and 4.85). After Mikula cleared 4.85 meters, only 10 athletes were left.

He then vaulted over 4.90 meters on his second to earn a spot on the podium as four more competitions dropped out. Mikula stayed alive at 4.95 meters on the second attempt to move into the top five, but his championship came to a close at 5.00 meters.

Mikula becomes the first IC men's track & field athlete to earn four All-America honors in his career.

Towards the end of the opening day, Luke Tobia took to the throwing circle for the weight throw championship and put together the best performance of his career as he finished as the national runner-up and set a new school record with a heave of 19.50 meters (63' 11.75").

Tobia entered the competition with hopes of reaching the podium as he was seeded seventh at 18.76 meters and surpassed those expectations significantly.

He eased into the competition with a first try of 18.45 meters and followed up with 18.65. After an 18.41 mark on his third attempt, Tobia moved on and launched 18.98 meters for a personal best. His fifth throw left a lot of room for improvement at 17.98 meters, and on his final try, Tobia unleashed a heave of 19.50 meters to move all the way up to the national runner-up spot.

Two other Bombers were in action today with preliminary races and neither disappointed.

Jalen Leonard-Osbourne moved onto tomorrow's final with a blazing time of 6.72 seconds in the 60-meter dash, which was the top time in the prelims. Not only was it the fastest time in qualifying, but it was also the sixth fastest time in Division III history and reestablished his own school record.

Leonard-Osbourne will look to become the first national champion in men's track & field history tomorrow at 3:40 p.m.

Andy Frank was also in action today in the 200-meter dash prelim and he will move onto tomorrow's final at 4:10 p.m. after a fourth place showing in the opening race.

Frank was seeded ninth at 21.88 seconds and he flew around the track in 21.77 seconds to put him in reach of a national title tomorrow.
