ITHACA, N.Y.- The Ithaca College men's basketball team secured its spot in the upcooming Liberty League Championship after winning against Vassar College, 72-59, on Senior Day on February 19 inside Ben Light Gymnasium. IC completes its regular season with a 17-8 overall record and 13-5 mark in league play.
George Sikoryak III and
Luka Radovich led the Bombers in the win with each scoring 13 points.
Skylar Sinon finished close behind with 11. Radovich also led Ithaca in rebounds with seven, while Sinon and
Triston Wennersten each grabbed five.
Vassar jumped to a quick start scoring its first jump shot within 30 seconds of tipoff. The Brewers added a layup and a free-throw before
Zach Warech finally put the first points on the board for the Bombers. Warech drained a three-pointer at the 17:46 minute mark, which Sikoryak followed with a layup just 30 seconds later. The Bombers tied things up with the Brewers 5-5 before Vassar made a layup to put them behind two points again.
Ithaca did not score again for nearly three minutes until Warech scored his second three-pointer of the day after another Brewer layup.
Liam Spellman took over the lead for the Bombers after making a layup and foul shot to put 11-9 on the score board with thirteen-and-a-half minutes left in the first half.
Andrew Geshickter and Sikoryak both added to the Bombers lead with a free throw and layup before Vassar made a three-pointer. Both teams went scoreless for the next three minutes before Radovich drained a three-point shot and
Noah Downing scored in the field to put the Bombers up 18-14 with just under eight-and-a-half minutes on the clock.
After missed ends on both sides of the court, Vassar called a timeout at the eight-minute mark. Returning from the timeout, Vassar scored on two free throws, however the Bombers responded immediately. Sinon put up two layups for Ithaca in addition to one from Wennersten, making the score 24-16 with 6:19 left on the clock.
Vassar scored two in a successful trip to the foul line before Sinon made a jumper and Sikoryak added two free throws at the 4:13 mark. The Brewers added another free throw and two layups to shorten their trail to just 28-26. Radovich added another layup for the Bombers soon after however, giving the Bombers a 30-26 lead with exactly three minutes left before Vassar called a timeout.
Following the timeout, Vassar added another layup before
Alex Barron put on in for Ithaca. The Brewers failed in two trips to the free throw line before Barron added a foul shot to the scoreboard for the Bombers with 55 seconds on the clock. Vassar scored on a three-point shot for the last points of the first half, giving Ithaca a 33-31 lead going into the second half.
The Brewers started the second half very similar to the first with a layup within the first 30 seconds of play, however this time they tied the score 33-33. Radovich broke the tie with a layup within the minute. Sikroyak followed up with another layup and Spellman with a steal to assist Geschickter with a layup to continue the momentum. Sikroyak added another layup in addition to one from Sinon to give the Bombers a 43-37 lead.
Vassar then broke up the Bombers scoring streak with a three-point shot to put the Brewers behind by just three points until Radovich added two from the foul line. Vassar added a jump shot and layup to get within just one point of Ithaca, 45-44, with fourteen-and-a-half minutes left in the game.
Ithaca called a full timeout with 14:13 on the clock. A block from
Jack Stern after the timeout ignited the crowd and created a scoring opportunity for the Bombers. After being fouled on a layup attempt, Stern went two-for-two from the line, putting Ithaca up 47-44 with thirteen minutes left.
Vassar tied the game 47-47 with just under twelve minutes left after making a foul shot and a layup. Wennersten broke the tie almost immediately with a three-pointer from an assist by Downing, but the Brewers responded just as quickly with one to tie things back up at 50-50. Radovich scored on the next drive with a layup to break the tie yet again before Ithaca called a time out.
After the time out, Vassar scored on a layup to draw the game again, but followed with a free throw to take a short-lived lead before
Logan Wendell made a layup. This put the Bombers back in the lead 54-53 with ten minutes left in the game. Radovich gets sent to the foul line with eight minutes on the clock and despite missing both shots, Wennersten grabs the rebound to put back a layup before Sikoryak drains a three-pointer, both increasing Ithaca's lead 59-53.
With just 6:42 on the clock, Wendell goes one-for-two from the free throw line. Both teams go without scoring for over two minutes until Wendell put up another layup for Ithaca. Vassar calls a timeout with 4:25 left and Ithaca continues to lead 62-53. Vassar puts points on the board for the first time in several minutes going two-for-two from the foul line, making the score 62-55.
After coming out of the game for a couple minutes after colliding with Spellman, Radovich re-enters to make a free throw shot followed by a Sinon jumper, putting the Bombers up 65-57 with nearly two minutes remaining in the game.
With just over a minute left in the second half, Spellman missed a shot just as the shot clock expires, but Warech grabbed the rebound, passed back to Spellman, who assisted Radovich in a thrilling layup to secure a 67-57 lead for the Bombers. Sinon makes a free throw followed by a Spellman free throw before Vassar calls a timeout with 39 seconds left.
Following the timeout, Spellman makes his second free throw to put the Bombers up 70-57. He is fouled and makes both shots again with just 17 seconds remaining. Vassar makes two free throws as the final points of the game, but the Bombers take home the win with a final score of 72-59.
Ithaca has secured the No. 2 spot in the Liberty League and will continue onto conference semifinals next weekend at RPI.
