Women's Basketball Advance Win Streak to 14 Straight after Victory over St. Lawrence

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's basketball team advanced its winning streak to 14 consecutive games after a 66-52 win over St. Lawrence University on Feb. 12 after the team honored its graduate students prior to the game in Ben Light Gymnasium.

Graduate student Grace Cannon finished the game with a double-double and led the Bombers with 19 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Lindsey Albertelli contributed 13 points for Ithaca, followed by Cara Volpe and Emily Dorn, each with eight points. Dorn also added eight rebounds for the Bombers.

Cannon scored the first points of the game for the Bombers after stopping St. Lawrence in its first offensive attempt. After a second stop, Volpe followed suit, giving Ithaca a 4-0 start within the first two minutes of the game. However, St. Lawrence shortened its trail quickly with two three-pointers, putting the Bombers down 6-4 with six minutes left in the first quarter.

The Saints continued to lead 10-4 after making two from the free throw line and a layup after three missed opportunities on offense for the Bombers with three minutes one the clock in the first quarter. Natalie Smith broke the dry spell for Ithaca after making both foul shot attempts with two-and-a-half minutes left on the clock and tightening its trail against 10-6.

Camryn Coffey brought energy back to the gym after scoring on an and-one and bringing the Bombers within just one point of the Saints. Albertelli took back the lead for the Bombers after another made layup, putting the team up 11-10 with a minute left on the clock, but St. Lawrence responded immediately with a three-point shot, giving them the lead back at 13-11. The Saints scored again on two free-throws with five seconds left in the first quarter, which secured a 14-11 lead over the Bombers for them going into the second quarter.

Cannon scored the first points of the quarter again for the Bombers, going one-for-two from the foul line and bringing the score to 15-12 after St. Lawrence followed up with a free-throw shot as well. Albertelli put up the next four points with a layup and two free-throws to take the lead for Ithaca at 16-15 with just under seven-and-a-half minutes left in the half.

The Saints took the lead back with less than six minutes on the clock, but Volpe answered immediately, taking the ball up the court for a layup, and giving the Bombers a 18-17 lead. Cannon followed up on the Bombers next offensive run and putting the scoreboard at 20-17 with 4:30 on the clock.

After the Bombers forced a turnover on St. Lawrence, the Saints called a time out. With four minutes, Volpe scored on a layup from an assist by Dorn to increase the lead to 22-17. St. Lawrence called another timeout at 3:22 before Dorn and Megan Yawman both score on layups. Volpe takes two from the free throw line with just under a minute-and-a-half left in the first half to maintain an Ithaca lead at 28-19. The Saints scored on a jump shot and two free-throws within the last minute to decrease the Bombers' lead to 28-23 at the end of the second quarter.

Coffey and Cannon gave the Bombers a strong start to the second half both scoring within the first minute. Yawman brought a surge of energy immediately after Cannon scored, stealing the ball from the Saints and bringing another scoring opportunity for Ithaca. Lindsay drove to the basketball right after the steal and scored on a layup, putting the Bombers up 34-23 before St. Lawrence called a timeout with 8:37 on the clock.

The Saints scored just 30 seconds after its timeout to bring the score to 34-25, but could not manage to score in its next three attempts. Albertelli was fouled with just over seven minutes on the clock and went one-for-two from the line to give the Bombers a 10 point lead, 35-25.

After both teams scored on several offensive drives, the Bombers continued to lead 39-29 with just under five minutes left in the third quarter after Albertelli made a layup. St. Lawrence then scored on a layup followed by two foul shots made by Smith, a steal from Dorn, a jumper by Smith, two more layups by the Saints and a Cannon layup to help the Bombers maintain its 10 point lead with 45-35 and 1:38 on the scoreboard.

Dorn put up a layup followed by a free throw and another layup from a steal by Smith to give Ithaca its first five points of the fourth quarter, setting the score at 55-40 with seven-and-a-half minutes left in the game. A layup from Cannon, a block followed by a layup off an offensive rebound for Albertelli, and two St. Lawrence free throws with six minutes on the clock put the Bombers up 59-42.
