ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team shut out Nazareth College 4–0 in the regular season finale to finish the 2022 season with a 14–3.
The Bombers wrapped up their regular season with a non-conference victory over the Golden Flyers, their sixth shutout win of the year. Ithaca got goals from strikers
Elizabeth Pillow and
Morgan Mullen, and midfielder
Jacqueline Mirabile. Goalkeepers
Macy Brandwein and
Alex Clough split the game to preserve the shutout. Strikers
Natalie Descalso,
Sarah DeVito, and
Emma Garver each recorded an assist in the game as well.
The game began with the Bombers controlling possession and nearly scored in the first minute. Mullen had a pair of shots, the first stopped by a defensive save, and the second going wide. However, the Bombers kept up the pressure and stayed on the offensive for the better part of the quarter. Mullen had another chance shortly after that was saved, but those would be the only shots of the quarter for the Bombers. The Golden Flyers only got one shot attempt off in the quarter, but it went wide, keeping the score at 0–0.
In the second quarter, the Bombers again put the pressure on the Nazareth defense quickly, with Mullen and Pillow each putting a shot wide in the opening two minutes. The Golden Flyers would get one of their best chances of the game a couple minutes into the quarter off a corner where Brandwein made her lone save of the first half to keep the game scoreless. The Bombers marched back down the field and were awarded a corner for themselves, and Pillow had the first shot. Her initial attempt was saved, but she corralled the rebound and put it home, giving the Bombers a 1–0 lead. Five minutes later, Ithaca had another corner. Mirabile passed it to Garver, who dished it to Descalso who fired the ball towards the net, and Mirabile got a piece of it to sneak it past the Golden Flyers goalkeeper, putting the Bombers up 2–0 with just under five minutes left in the half.
Clough entered the game at halftime for Brandwein, and the Bombers got right back to work out of the break. Descalso had a shot blocked a minute in, and Pillow had one saved a minute later. Towards the middle of the quarter, Clough made her lone save of the contest to keep the score at 2–0. With five minutes left in the third, Ithaca had a corner that generated three shots. The first one by Descalso was saved, but the Bombers retained possession. Shortly after, Mullen put another shot on goal but was stopped, and Pillow scored off another rebound for her seventh goal of the season, and the Bombers third of the game.
The Bombers controlled the fourth quarter as well, with Garver,
Brianna Lennon, and Mullen having scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. The only goal of the quarter came five minutes in when DeVito found Mullen near the goal to put the finishing touches on a 4–0 win.
The Bombers dominated play from start to finish, outshooting the Golden Flyers 34–4, and lead in shots on goal 21–2. The Bombers also had 14 penalty corners to the Golden Flyers one.
The Bombers next game is the Liberty League Tournament semifinals against William Smith College at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 at Higgins Stadium.
