ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team lost to William Smith College, 1–0, in overtime in the Liberty League semifinals at Higgins Stadium on November 4. The Bombers will wait to find out their at-large chances on Sunday night as part of the NCAA Selection Show at 10:30 p.m.
The Bombers were outshot by the Herons 12–9 and trailed in shots on goal 6–5. William Smith also led in corners, having six to Ithaca's two.
Morgan Mullen and
Natalie Descalso recorded all five of the Bombers' shots on goal, with Mullen having three and Descalso with two. Graduate student goalkeeper
Macy Brandwein made five stops on six shots on goal through nearly 62 minutes of action.
The Herons came out of the gate putting the pressure on the Bombers defense, controlling the first quarter. A penalty corner in the 6
th minute ended with a shot attempt for the Herons but was blocked and cleared after a foul on William Smith. Then, just a minute later, the same scenario happened again, as the Bombers were able to weather the storm and keep the game scoreless. With under a minute left in the frame, the Herons had a corner opportunity that generated two shots. Brandwein made her first save of the game, and the other shot went wide, and the Bombers would go into the second quarter tied 0–0.
Ithaca's first shot of the game would come six minutes into the second quarter, as Mullen put a shot on goal, but couldn't get it past the Herons goalkeeper. The Bombers did a better job of limiting William Smith's offense in the second half, only allowing one shot that was not on goal. In the last two minutes of the half, Descalso had a shot blocked, but the rebound came right back to her. However, her second shot attempt was saved, and the game would be stuck in a scoreless tie heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Bombers started strong, getting a couple of chances right off the bat.
Elizabeth Pillow had two shots in the first two minutes of the half, both going wide. The Bombers would find themselves in foul trouble in the middle of the third quarter, as
Meara Bury was called for a green card shortly after Pillow's chances. The Herons went on the offensive with the advantage, having a shot make it past Brandwein, but
Jacqueline Mirabile made a defensive save to keep the game tied. Shortly after, the Herons had a penalty corner and put another shot on target, this time with Brandwein making the stop. Over the next three minutes, the Herons would have two more penalty corners and three shots, with two on goal and the third wide. The Bombers would return to being a player down halfway through the third, as
Nicole Fortunato was called for a yellow corner. Differently from the green card earlier, the Bombers would end up with the best chance following the call. Mirabile passed it to Descalso off a corner, but her attempt was blocked, and the Bombers were called for a foul.
Ithaca began the fourth quarter with a couple of chances, led by the striker duo of Mullen and Descalso. Descalso had a shot saved in the first minute of the fourth quarter, and Mullen had two shots on goal shortly after. Those chances would be the Bombers last in regulation, and William Smith had an opportunity to take the lead late, but Brandwein stood tall. After 60 minutes, the game would be tied as it started, 0–0.
The game went to overtime, but the Herons did not need much time to find the game-winning goal. A pass that was sent across the goal was missed by Brandwein, and the open Heron tapped it in to send William Smith to the Liberty League final.
If the Bombers do not receive an at-large bid, they finish their 2022 season with a 14–4 record, including 6–1 against Liberty League opponents.
