Despite Slow Start Bombers Find Their Rhythm in Win over Union

ITHACA, N.Y. – Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm throughout this contest, with tough defense and strong board play making the difference for the Bombers. Ithaca's seventh consecutive win gives the squad a 12-3 record and sets them up for success heading into the backend of Liberty League play. The Union College Dutchwomen dropped to 4-10 and failed to build on their recent victory against Bard College.

Inside the Box Score:
  • Cara Volpe and Grace Cannon carried the Bombers in terms of scoring. The pair had 18 and 15 points respectively, accounting for 61% of the team's points. Cannon recorded yet another double-double with 11 boards. It was her fifth double-double of the season.
  • Emily Dorn had a quiet but efficient night, posting six points, four assists, and 11 rebounds. Her efficiency rating of 17 was the second highest on the team.
  •  The game was defensive-minded, with both teams committing 19 turnovers.
  • The Dutchwomen had three players with over 10 points and were led by Megan Lee (13).
How it Happened:
  • The Dutchmen started the first and second quarter strong, with the Bombers struggling from the field early on. Ithaca made up for their issues from outside the arc by dominating the paint with rebounds and second chance points. Union didn't record and offensive rebound until the fourth quarter, while Ithaca had nine second chance opportunities on the offensive side of the floor by halftime.
  • Union started the second quarter with a 9-0 run before triggering a pair of timeouts from the Bombers coaching staff. Ithaca responded confidently through Cara Volpe and Grace Cannon who were consistently converting from inside the paint.
  • Cannon and Volpe continued their dominance in the second half by making plays on both ends of the court. Both seniors were heavily involved on the defensive end, blocking shots and drawing fouls.
  • The Bombers never relinquished their control over the paint, scoring 15 second chance points compared to The Dutchwomen's two. Their scoring troubles were alleviated in the fourth quarter by their form at the free-throw line (85.7%, 6-7).

The Bombers host No. 21 St. John Fischer on Tuesday, January 25 at 7 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the 2021-22 season.
