ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's basketball team dominated No. 23 St. John Fisher College 76-54 as it grew its winning streak to eight straight games on Tuesday evening.
Five Bombers scored double digits against the Cardinals. Senior
Cara Volpe led the Bombers in both points and assists with 15 and five, respectfully. Junior
Camryn Coffey and graduate-student
Grace Cannon followed close behind with 13 points each, while graduate-student
Megan Yawman had 11 and junior
Emily Dorn had 10. Dorn also led the team in rebounds with nine.
Coffey gave the Bombers a quick start to the game scoring the first shot of the game just 38 seconds into the first quarter. However, the Cardinals responded shortly after with a layup and free throw from Leah Koonmen to put Fisher up 3-2.
The Bombers trailed Fisher for over two minutes after Koonmen's free throw. Volpe then scored on a layup to tie the game again at 6-6 with 6:47 on the clock. Yawman broke the stint with a layup to spark an uninterrupted 11 point run and kept Fisher from scoring for the remainder of the first quarter. Ithaca went into the second quarter with a 17-6 lead.
Ithaca continued to grow its lead into the first minute-and-a-half of the second quarter starting with a layups from Cannon and Buxton. Buxton added a three-pointer to put the Bombers up 24-6. After going scoreless for nearly 10 minutes, the Cardinals saw Miranda Lynch score their first three-pointer of the game. After both teams made a few scoreless runs, Koonmen scored another trey for Fisher followed by a Cannon jumper, changing the score to 26-12 with 5:41 remaining in the half. Ithaca and Fisher both ended the half with a few successful runs each to finish the first half 31-18, with the Bombers in the lead.
Fisher scored the first points of the second half within the first 40 seconds, but the Bombers followed by quickly adding nine points to their lead with three three-pointers in a row, the first from Coffey and second two from
Megan Yawman. Koonmen then scored on a layup, but Coffey followed with a second three-pointer to give the Bombers a 20-point lead, 43-23.
Dorn and senior
Lindsey Albertelli both scored on layups before Fisher scored points in three runs followed by a
Cara Volpe layup, setting the score at 47-31. Both teams had successful runs to end the third quarter. Dorn scored five points in the last two minutes before Koonmen scored again, ending the quarter at 54-36 with Ithaca still leading.
Fisher started off the final quarter with a layup and jump shot for four additional points, but Volpe scored three consecutive layups in the first three minutes of the final period to set the Bombers up 60-43. Ithaca scored 16 points to Fisher's 11 in the last seven minutes of play, with shots made by Cannon, Albertelli, Volpe, and senior
Alyssa Spady. Despite a 5-0 spark in the last three minutes of the game, the Cardinals could not close in on the Bombers lead. Ithaca won the game with a final score of 76-54, growing its overall record to 13-3.
The Bombers next game is on Jan. 28 at Liberty League opponent William Smith College at 5:30 PM.
