Men’s Soccer Blanked by Scranton in Non-Conference Showdown

ITHACA, N.Y. - The No. 23 ranked Ithaca College men's soccer team suffered its second consecutive loss on Wednesday evening after being shut out by the University of Scranton 1-0 at Higgins Stadium. The Bombers drop to 2-2 with the defeat while the Royals picked up their first victory of the season and improved to 1-1. This was the first meeting between the two schools since 2015.

It was a defensive battle from the get-go, as neither unit was able to register a goal in the first half. Scranton appeared to control the possession with a 4-to-1 shot attempt advantage.

IC threatened the Royals' defensive backline in the early stages of the second half when senior defender Colin Shust had a dangerous header opportunity off of a corner kick that sailed just above his head and landed out of bounds.

Scranton tallied the first and only score of the game in the 69th minute when midfielder Patrick Walls Kelly netted a header past goalkeeper Josh Koenig to give his team a 1-0 edge. Midfielder Christian Arcos assisted the go-ahead score on the play.

Ithaca came close to knotting things up one goal apiece in the 81st minute, but junior Alex Cabeca's corner kick drifted right past Shust and landed wide right of the goal frame.

Josh Koenig played all 90 minutes and recorded two saves for the Bombers. Ithaca will look to jump back into the win column on Saturday, September 11 when it hosts St. John Fisher College. The game is slated to kickoff at 2 p.m. at Carp Wood Field.
