Pair of First Half Goals Sink Bombers in Road Loss to No. 7 William Smith College

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team were unable to play the role of spoilers on Wednesday as they dropped a 2-0 result on the road to the No. 7 ranked William Smith College. It was a highly anticipated matchup between two of the top squads within the Liberty League and saw the Herons net a pair of first half goals as they were able to hold on in the second half.

William Smith (7-1-1, 3-0 Liberty League) pressed high up the pitch in the early moments of the match and it took a sprawling save from Claire Reader to keep the game scoreless at the 2:17 mark. The Bombers were able to thwart off a few other William Smith scoring chances, but the deadlock was broken on a shot from Merilyn Hinrichs that curled into the top left corner. The goal was credited as a double assist which went to Sheila McQuillen and Julia Berg who provided nice build up play leading to the strike.

The Herons made it in 2-0 in the 43rd minute when a Julia Keogh attempt ended up just inside the left goal past and past Reader. She collected a loose ball within the 18-yard box and used her left foot to fire the shot into the back of the net. The score remained the same into the halftime break.

Ithaca would have its best opportunity to score within the second half as it came off a set piece opportunity. As the Bombers were in striking distance, Megan O'Reilly stepped up to take a free kick opportunity and it just went over the top of the crossbar in the 63rd minute.

Claire Reader faced a season-high 16 shots and was up for the task tallying eight saves. The loss drops IC's overall record to 6-2 and 1-1 within the Liberty League.

The Bombers will look to rebound on Saturday in another road contest with this one slated against No. 23 St. Lawrence University. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
