ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team began its Liberty League campaign with a 3-1 win over Clarkson on Saturday as the victory pushed the Bombers season record to 6-1. IC had three different goal scorers net their first goal of the 2021 campaign.
The game started off with early Clarkson pressure in the first five minutes. They managed to put one in the back of the net, only for it to get waved off for an offside call after a discussion by the officials. Just a few minutes later, celebration erupted for the home team with graduate midfielder
Kate Kohler who had been waiting for a long time to net her first collegiate career goal, which occurred via a header off a corner kick taken by
Rebecca Jackson in the 17
th minute.
Just four minutes later, Clarkson would tie it as Angelina Fahrenkrug took a shot from outside the 18-yard box off a volley to tie the game at one goal apiece. It was all Bombers after that as
Megan O'Reilly took a free kick from outside the 18 aiming towards the top right corner in the 32nd minute, which gave Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio some trouble but managed to make the save. Just three minutes later,
Rosie Bostian took a hard shot from the top-left of the 18-yard box, making DiCaprio dive for it to make the save and keep the game level.
Alex Epifani tried to make one last attempt with five seconds left in the half but could not slot the ball past Dicaprio.
The Bombers defense looked sharp in the last 15 minutes of the first half only letting one shot get to
Claire Reader in the 43
rd minute. Ithaca College would regain the lead in the 49
th minute as
Megan O'Reilly sent a long through ball to
Megan Buttinger who would net her first collegiate career goal as well.
Sophomore defender
Brenna Lorenzen would then be welcomed to the first-goal club as well with her first collegiate career goal off the feed from
Katy Krueger finding her alone in front for an easy finish. Lorenzen scored just minutes after coming onto the pitch as a substitute.
In the second half, the Bombers defense continued to do their good work having let only two shots get to Reader. After the 69
th minute there were no shots on target recorded by Clarkson University.
Overall, DiCaprio of the Golden Knights did well throughout the game to limit the IC's chances, making a total of 15 saves out of 28 total shot attempts.
Claire Reader would end the game making six saves for the Bombers.
Ithaca College will look to continue their winning ways as the team will hit the road to take on No. 7 William Smith College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29 in Geneva, N.Y.
