ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College volleyball team came out victorious on Friday evening after surging past St. Lawrence for a 3-1 win, 25-13, 25-20, 23-25, and 25-12 at Ben Light Gymnasium. The win pushed the Bombers to 7-6, while the Saints dropped to 6-6. It was also head coach
Johan Dulfer's 100
th career victory at Ithaca.
Â
"We did a good job taking care of the little things early on," said Dulfer. "(We) got a little flustered in the third set but recovered well and did a really solid job overall."
When asked about his 100
th career win for the Bombers, Dulfer responded, "It means nothing more. I would give all of them up for more victories this season. What matters is going 1-0 in conference every day, and we did just that."
Â
Ithaca turned in a potent attack in the triumph, notching a .246 hitting percentage while stifling St. Lawrence to a sheer .000 clip. The Bombers have now won five consecutive matches over the Saints, dating back to 2016.
Â
Outside hitter
Jaelyn Hershberger had a splendid match on Friday, making an impact in several aspects. The Colorado native logged eight kills and seven digs to go along with a team-high 23 total attacks. Graduate student
Paris Buckner capped off a standout performance, tallying seven kills and five digs while leading the unit with seven blocks.
Â
The Bombers had 50 kills in the match and nine of them go next to
Aleka Darko's name in the stat sheet. The first year led the Ithaca offense in that category, which was a new career-high for her. She also posted one block in the contest. Sophomore
Jamie Koopman rose to the occasion, dishing out eight kills in addition to a .250 hitting percentage on the floor.
Â
IC took the first set by storm, posting an efficient .391 hitting percentage to go along with 11 kills. Four of them belonged to Darko who helped the Bombers cruise to an opening 25-13 win.
Â
A competitive second set slowly turned in the Bomber's favor, as they found themselves up 21-19. Kills from the entire frontline kept Ithaca in business throughout the remainder of the set, which ended with a
Paris Buckner scoring strike to hand the Bombers a 25-20 win.
Â
Perhaps the most enticing set of the match came in the third. IC dug itself into a 19-23 deficit before rallying to generate three straight points to make it 22-23. That's before the Saints managed to capture the victory with a Natalie Piper kill to send it to a fourth set. Despite the close margin, the Bombers outnumbered the Saints in total kills with 12-to-8 in the frame.
Â
The fourth and final set was a different story, however, as IC went on an offensive warpath to put the match away. While up 14-6, the Bombers rattled off six straight points to take a comfortable 20-6 lead. Moments later, outside hitter
Samantha Klemm put the nail in the coffin by recording the game-clinching kill to give Ithaca a 25-12 win.
Â
The Bombers return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Potsdam, N.Y. to square off against Liberty League rival Clarkson University. First serve is slated to take place at 4 p.m.
