PITTSFORD, N.Y. – After dropping its first game of the season to Nazareth College on Saturday, the Ithaca College women's soccer team responded in a big way by picking up a 3-1 road victory over St. John Fisher on Tuesday evening. The Bombers peppered the net before being rewarded in the 43
rd minute and scored a pair of insurance goals in the second half with St. John Fisher tallying a late goal of its own.
It was clear from the opening minutes that IC intent was to direct their respective shot attempts on the goal frame and the Bombers nearly got on the scoreboard at the 22:33 mark of the first half and it took a diving save from Hallie Tickell on a
Megan O'Reilly attempt to keep the game scoreless.
In the 43
rd minute, Ithaca College earned a corner kick opportunity that was crossed into the box by
Delaney Rutan and a header attempt from
Sophia Mahoney was initially saved once again by Hallie Tickell but on the ensuing rebound
Kelsey Espenhorst pounced on the opportunity and headed the ball into the back of the net. It was the first goal of the 2021 season for Espenhorst and the fifth of her collegiate career.
The Bombers carried the 1-0 lead into the halftime break as the squad outshot St. John Fisher by a 12-3 margin within the first half. It was at the 59:30 mark with the team once again making several dangerous passes in the 18-yard box that
Delaney Rutan whipped in a cross to the far side that eluded all defenders and
Rachel Richards slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Carrying the 2-0 lead, IC added another insurance effort on a solo goal off the foot of sophomore forward
Rosie Bostian. She made a nice move that gave her enough space to fire a shot from outside the box that eluded the Cardinals keeper in the bottom left corner. The Cardinals scored their lone goal of the match in the 81
st minute when Carli Kovarik bested
Claire Reader for her seventh goal of the 2021 season.
Reader finished with three saves for the Bombers and
Rosie Bostian,
Delaney Rutan and
Megan O'Reilly each finished with three shots apiece.
Ithaca College (5-1) will now enter conference play with a Liberty League contest slated for this Saturday, September 25 when they host Clarkson University. First kick from Carp Wood Field is slated for 2 p.m.
