ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season on Saturday afternoon after falling to Nazareth College 1-0 at Carp Wood Field. The Bombers fall to 4-1 on the season with the loss, while Nazareth earned its first victory to improve to 1-3-2.
Defense was the tale of the tape in the first half, as neither team could find a way to net a goal. The Bombers threatened numerous times offensively, however, including a
Megan O'Reilly shot attempt that fell right into the hands of the Nazareth goalkeeper just four minutes into the contest.
In the 18
th minute,
Sophia Mahoney nearly capitalized off of a corner kick by leaping high into the air to head a shot, but the loose ball was pounced on by the Nazareth goalkeeper.
Just seven minutes out of the halftime break, Nazareth struck quickly to grab a 1-0 lead. Golden Flyers forward Kristen Prohaska surged a shot into the box and the ball bounced right back to midfielder McKayla Hughes, who tapped the ball into the top left corner of the goal from seven yards out.
Later in the stanza during the 72
nd minute, first year midfielder
Bailey Fisher nearly netted the equalizer for IC off of a corner kick, but her effort sailed wide right of the post.
The Bombers faced another massive scoring opportunity in the 81
st minute, when O'Reilly sliced a shot towards the middle of the net. Unfortunately, her volley was captured by the goalkeeper.
Despite not tallying a single goal, Ithaca kept the Nazareth defense on its heels all game and outnumbered the Golden Flyers with 9-to-7 shots on goal, 12-to-6 corner kicks, and 15-to-9 in total shots. Five of those 15 shot attempts came from O'Reilly on the counterattack.
Goalkeeper
Claire Reader played all 90 minutes and suffered her first defeat of the 2021 campaign. The Newark, Delaware product still notched six saves in the game.
The Bombers will look to rebound on Tuesday, September 21 when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on St. John Fisher College for a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
