Men’s Soccer Upended by Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Despite outshooting the home team by a 16-8 margin the Ithaca College men's soccer team couldn't find the back of the net on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a 1-0 game to the No. 24 ranked SUNY Cortland.

The decisive goal was scored in the 60th minute by the Red Dragons with Muiz Bayewu firing in a cross from the left side of the 18-yard box that Blake Aronson headed into the back of the net. It was the first goal allowed on the season by Bombers goalkeeper Ian Whitfield.

Ithaca College nearly netted a goal at the 14:58 mark of the first half when Christopher Ogden rocketed a shot that was blocked by a Cortland defender. In the 43rd minute, the Bombers were on the counter attack but a Theo Scott shot attempt sailed wide left of the goal frame. IC tallied 10 shots within the first half and had four corner kicks.

IC had a nice stretch of offensive possession in the 65th minute as a Duncan Schnur attempt was once again blocked by a Red Dragons defender that forced a corner kick opportunity. On the ensuing set piece, the ball was whipped into the box and Brendan Lebitsch fired a shot that forced a Braden Melveney save.

Theo Scott led all players with four shot attempts with teammate Christopher Ogden finishing with three shots in his 37 minutes of action.

The Bombers (2-4-2) will look to return to their winning ways in their final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, September 21. Ithaca will travel to Hamilton College for a 4:30 p.m. start.
