Baseball Splits with RPI at Freeman Field on Sunday

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team split its Liberty League doubleheader with RPI on Sunday afternoon at Freeman Field with a 14-0 win in the opener and a 10-7 extra inning loss in game two. Ithaca is now 16-9-1 on the season and 11-4-1 in the Liberty League.

GAME ONE: Ithaca 14, RPI 0

The Bombers got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI double to dead centerfield off the bat of Buzz Shirley and Garrett Callaghan scored all the way from first base.

IC then added a run in each of the next four innings to take a 5-0 lead into the sixth inning. In the bottom half of the sixth, the Bombers erupted for nine runs on seven hits to account for the final score of 14-0.

Ithaca scored on an error in the third as a liner back to the pitcher was thrown away at third base Colin Shashaty came home. In the third, Garrett Callaghan scored one of his three runs in the game on a wild pitch and Shashaty scored in the fourth on another wild pitch. Gil Merod reached on an infield single in the fifth and Callaghan crossed the plate.

In the sixth, seven different Bombers drove in a run as 16 players came to the plate.

Kyle Lambert improved his record to 5-0 on the season in 6.0 innings of work. Lambert cruised through hit outing on just 72 pitches as he allowed three hits and one walk with five strikeouts. John Griffin tossed the seventh.

Ethan Rothstein went 3-for-3 in the opener, while Shirley was 3-for-4 with three RBI. The Bombers also stole five bases – two from Callaghan and Shashaty and one by Rothstein.

GAME TWO: RPI 10, Ithaca 7 (11 innings)

RPI struck first in the nightcap with a bases loaded single through the right side in the top of the fifth inning. A few pitches later, a two-run single to right-center extended the Engineers' lead to 3-0 and knocked Shirley out of the game and IC went to Garrett Bell out of the bullpen.

Shirley allowed three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work with three strikeouts.

Ithaca got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Shashaty stroked a triple to right-center and then scored on a throwing error to the plate to make the score 3-1. After the second out was recorded, Lynch drew a walk to load the bases and then Callaghan roped a bases-clearing double off the right field fence to give Ithaca a 4-3 lead.

RPI went back on top in the sixth, 5-4, with two runs. The first scored on a fielder's choice during an attempted double play turn and the second came home on a single up the middle. The Engineers added another run to their lead in the eighth on double to left-center.

In the bottom of the ninth, Shashaty led off with a base hit and Merod followed with a pinch hit single. After an out was recorded, pinch runner Ethan McDonough moved up to second on a wild pitch to set up the game-tying single through the left side by Fabbo to make the score 6-6. The game went to extras after Ithaca left the bases loaded. Barker-Hook sent a blooper to shallow right-center but RPI's second baseman made a diving catch to extend the contest.

RPI regained the lead in the top of the 10th as a lead-off double came around to score after a sac bunt and single up the middle.

The Bombers then answered in the bottom of the 10th as Rothstein walked and moved up on a wild pitch to set up a line drive RBI single to right from Shashaty to knot the game at 10-10. IC would once again load the bases but was unable to push the winning run home.

RPI quickly went back on top in the 11th with a lead-off double and a sac bunt that was thrown away at third base, allowing the runner to score. After a pitching change, RPI laid down another bunt and that was sent down the right field line to bring another run in. A single through the left side extended RPI's lead to 10-7 for the eventual final score.

Ithaca wraps up its regular season next weekend with four games against Rochester.
